Tropical finish?
      #215899 - 01/09/12 07:02 PM

A mate just purchased a commercial FN m98 made in 1951. The seller claims it has a tropical finish to the metal work. Anyone know what the deal is with this? The rifle is in 9.3x64 and is in great condition.

good buy, best allround cartridge ever!

I have a problem with the fact it was made as a 9,3x64 in 1951. before WW 2 the 9,3x64 was a proprietary cartridge only made by Wilhelm Brennecke Leipzig. we can assume that no ammo was made after 1941/42 and it was allways rare. in 1951 nobody could anticipate it was ever made again. I have no data but it cant be before 1955/56 that DWM start's the production.

so the action was made by FN in 1951 but I believe the whole rifle was build together some year's later.

Lancaster,
You maybe correct. The barrel appears original (judging by the serial number on the barrel having the same font style as the serial number on the reciever) so maybe it was originally a 9.3x62.
Anyway below are a few images.

Thanks for that. Do you have any reference that talks about this or can you tell me when this finish was popular?
Thanks
George

My A&N 1910 MS (cased) has the stock done with varnish. Over tiime (90 years) it has age hardened and tends to become brittle.

I've seen quite a few varnished MS's but only a few guns with Varnish on the barrel and was never sure if it was factory or home done.

I´m quite sure that using boiled lenseed oil gives the outcome which looks same as thinned varnish.
