Brno 9.3x62mm
      #203542 - 24/02/12 12:35 PM

I finally decided to get a 9.3x62mm but didn't like the factory offerings. I bought a Brno small ring Mauser in 8x57 and I am going to have it rebored and rechambered. I am going to have an Oberndorf style bolt handle put on and install Talley QD bases. The stock is going to be reshaped into a more British style and the checkering recut. I just got a Leupold FXII 4x33 scope and sent it to Leupold to have a German #4 reticle installed. This will be my theoretical one gun for everything from Coyotes to Pachyderns.

Not sure if this is the case with your rifle but a lot of those old bruno's (Mod21 &22 est) have dovetails already built into the action which negate the need for Tally Bases.

This one is a round top and doesn't have the dovetails

It will be a semi-British until I can swing a nicely figured Walnut stock

my opinion.....i say a new bolt knob oberndorf style ,,add a horn forend tip without getting into the checkering ,,,jewel the bolt ,,darken up the wood without the fake red ,,silvers pad and call it a day.....paul

Looks perfect right now, except for the recoil pad, to my eye. I'd certainly not drop the double set, double throw triggers, that's for sure. I love 'em.

Stock looks good to me as well as far as shape and style goes, but colour could do with enhancing and as has been said a cross bolt and change the pad and it is good to go.

Its a shame to drill and tapp that nice action!

It has already been D&T, non original stock and a different bolt handle added. I don't feel the least bit guilty having it changed to suit me. Had it been a pristine example I would not be messing with it. As to model I believe it is a 22. The double triggers will stay.

The 21 is the rifle version, and the carbine is the 22. What year is stamped on the side and what safety does it have?

OOPS! Got in a hurry, yes it is the 21. It has the safety on the left side of the shroud. I will check on the year stamp.

The rifle will not be in my hands until Wednesday to check the date stamp. Here is another pic with a view of the top and safety:

I might have to add Blackburn bottom metal later too.

Nice start for a project.

Fit a classic recoil pad
Forend tip
Darken the stock (a little)
Straighten the bolt handle

A fixed 4x is perfect for the 9.3x62.

My thoughts (based upon experience with at least more than 10 BRNO´s M21/21) :

The barrels and stocks of those rifles are very slim , what makes them so attractive.

Reboring the barrel from 8mm to 9,3 results in very thin ( and light for caliber ) walls of the barrel.
Barrel mouth is very thin (too thin?) because the front sight ramp is sleeved .

Most of the very slim stocks were cracked inside under reccoil even in the standard calibers (8x60,8x57,7x64).The 9,3 will strain the stock much more.

The recoil of the 9,3x62 in the resulting very light rifle is not just that what I would name comfortable.

So I first would leave all the secondary thoughts about BM, bolt handle and so on and go for a new barrel with more flesh ( if it must be a 9,3x62).
Alternatively (copying the contour) chosing a cartridge in the .270 to 8 mm class.

Just my 2 ct.

The gentleman doing the reboring has done several Brnos and says it will be fine. I will be adding crossbolts also. It should be a joy to carry and the recoil should not be as bad as a .375 H&H Ruger Number 1 which I enjoy shooting.

The crossbolts will most certainly help, if done well. I also had to add a recoil lug back of the sight to my first .375/06IMP, a light rifle with custom stock. The recoil was cracking the properly bedded "lightweight" Fagen Reinhart claro stock around every 1,000 rounds, just about like clock work.

After rebedding for the 3rd time, and installing the crossbolts, it took over 2,000rounds to crack the 4th time. That's when I re-bed the rifle, changed the bolts and installed the lug. That's what it took and after 15,000 rounds, the stock was still sound, if not badly battered by 3 owners and barrel was retired - I still have it ??don't knwo why. I do hope the crossbolts are all that's necessary in your rifle.

As to scopes, a 1.5 X 4X is also a great scope for such a rifle. More magnification is not necessary, although can be nice for load development. On a larger powder scope, after a load is picked, the rifle's zeros should be checked at a 3X or 4X setting, then rifle's adjustment ring taped at that setting and left alone. It's a really nasty thing to raise the rifle on a fast running animal at close range, only to find the scope set at 9X or 10X. Been there.

Thanks for the tips. I will probably go ahead and glass bed it too just to be on the safe side. Most of my rifles wear a Leupold 6x42 scope but I didn't think that would look quite right so that is why I went with the 4x33. I looked at several of the low power variables but I think the fixed power is in keeping with the "keep it simple and rugged" that I am aiming for.
