Offered a rare one?
      #307432 - 08/11/17 07:20 AM

I got a message on another Forum from a user that posted 3 years ago about a Mauser he had. I had expressed an interest and he save the information. Here is the kicker, Type M, short action, 6.5X54, double claw mounts, no scope and DST.

While I was interested, he also sent a letter from an Auction house in England that, IMHO, inflated the value to get the sale. To the owners credit he didn't ask the top dollar price but about mid way. Still might be worth the price due to the rarity. If matching scope I might be gathering funds. I have just over done it this fall with several buys the seemed to fall into my lap.

So, how rare is this rifle? Pros? Cons (other then trying to make ammo)?

Don

The Kurz Mausers are pretty rare but that said, seems like the TypeM and S are the most common of them.
Having the claw mounts but no matching rings is quite problematic as far as determining whether it is a "good" deal or not as it could easily cost you as much as the rifle to get proper rings made as well as sourcing a period correct scope - if that is what you want the end result to be.
Without disclosing the price, can you link to the original post so we can take a look at it?

Just that in all the years I have been paying attention I have seen more Ms and Ss.
Might be just my neck of the woods and wouldn’t be surprised if the Kurz production mirrored the standard Oberndorf action with Bs being most common, As the rarest and the full stocked rifles somewhere between.

I’ve had two Kurz mausers, one an S and the other I could swear was also an S but have forgot and haven’t found the pictures of it. Remember it had really nice wood for an original Mauser though.

Hi Don,
Lots of info provided in the gunboards thread, pay attention to what Axel aka.. Kudue has determined from the clues provided by the rifle. I always thought the Type A was the rarest but any unmolested Mdl K is getting rare as hens teeth these days. Biggest collectability detractor I think would be the claw mounts, especially front ring being cut for the mount. That being said, sure would be a fun gun to fit a proper period scope to & use the heck out of it! If you can buy it at a price you can live with it will make a neat little rifle. I have a MDL K Type B with single square bridge, double set triggers, chambered 250-3000 made in 1932 & I know it would take a lot of $$$'s to even get me to discuss selling it! Good luck.

m4220

PS: I have a few boxes of 6.5x54 Mauser ammo squirreled away just in case one comes this way!

I happened accross a Type M carbine w/a Kurz action last year at a local show.
6.5K caliber. No alterations to the carbine, all match, I'd say 95% orig finish.
Wasn't looking for one, just fell in love with it and thought the take it home price was right @ $2500.

I'll see if I can get some decent pics up.
I think the ser# puts it pre WW1,, my estimation of course.
I'll dig it out.

$2500 sounds like a good buy on that one!
I sold one of mine, a square bridge in 8mm Kurz for about that and the 6.5 I had I got more for.
The 8mm is the unloved chambering for sure but isn't a bad woods cartridge for any game up through deer.

I sold my kurz M-carbine for 2K some years ago. And apparently it was very difficult to sell as nobody wanted it. I had up for sale in almost 6 months time before some reacted. Thankfully I sold it to a Mauser collector here in Denmark. I know where it is and the agreement with the transaction was if it ever was to be sold I wanted to hear about...

Hello Gentlemen,

Thanks for letting me into your group.
I am not a collector, but I do have a collectors rifle which I would like to sell. The rifle is all original with matching serial numbers. I am not trying to get rich, just make a fair deal.
There is a lot of information, and images, on the Gunboards forum which TN_Longhunter referenced above.
What I do know:
* There was an 8x60 Mauser for sale last March at Julia's. Estimated value $6500-8500.
It had been "customized". Not a Kurz, not an M type.
http://jamesdjulia.com/item/1624-391/
* There is a Kurz Mauser currently for sale on Guns International for $6500. Also looks to be customized, not an M type.
http://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-fo...un_id=100948338
* On lancaster's thread "Mauser rifles at auctions", which has been going for some 5 years now, I did not see one Kurz in 6.5 x 54 M type which was not molested. (just a quick scan)
* From an expert that you all know, Kuduae: "Yes, it is an M type on a short Mauser K action (kurz = short), about the rarest type of commercial Mauser sporters."
* From Christie's in 2015, "It has been a number of years since I last encountered a Kurz in such original condition. It is most certainly a collectors piece rather than an active shooter as the 6.5x54mm calibre does not lend itself to a ready supply of ammunition. By way of current auction estimate, I suggest a published estimate of GBP £4000-6000 (approx. USD $6000-9000
at current exchange rates).
* From Holt's in 2015, "Ah – if it’s a Kurz action that makes a world of difference....from an auction perspective we are more in the £3000‐5000 area. We had one some years back, which sold on the hammer at £4300." and "Only approximately 200 hundred Kurz model rifles were made with full length stocks."
* From Julia's in Dec. 2014, "we are in agreement that the proper conservative auction estimate for this rifle is in the $4000‐7000 range. There is no ceiling on how high the rifle could go with spirited competitive bidding."

I would be glad to answer any questions, especially if you might be making a serious offer.
Also, how do I post images here? I'd really like to photograph and post an image of the bore. My Grandfather and Mother took great care of this gun.

Would make a nice Christmas gift for a Lady Shooter!

I just bought the cleanest unaltered 8x51 tauscher import '(horn schnabel half stock) for 3600 from cabelas about 3 months ago flipped it for 6500 to a well known collector in the northeast who knew what I paid,,,,,,cabelas would not believe me that it was a C +R that's how nice the condition was ,,, it was 2 serial numbers off the ones in speeds book ,,that being said I know this guy has seen more Mausers than any one on here and he must feel it's worth at least 7500 to 8500. Cabelas had no idea what it was ...I did not have the gun long enough to take any pics sorry. ........paul

Trying to follow but not sure. If any of these M Types are for sale, or if you know of others, please email pics to me @ Lanceshopper at gmail. com.

Thanks,

colonelc, it is good that you are taking the time to reach out to the auctions and also to scan the sale ads as there is a lot you can learn from that.
Notice, however, that even the low estimates that you were given vary by as much as 50% ($4K to $6K). That’s a big difference!
Also, Barnett prices everything he has at least 25% higher than market and that gun has a bit of a different target market than an original Mauser.
I will say this, if your rifle is as clean as you say, it will be no problem getting a good price for it.

Thanks Huvius,
I was hoping someone would say that. Yes, I have done a good bit of research over the last 5 years. I really don't want this gun to stay in the safe for another 5...
I'll post images as soon as I figure that out.

I am asking $8000.

Sure wish I could get together with you all on a shooting range and give this rifle a chance to show it's stuff. I believe it would change ownership swiftly. My Mom used it to hunt deer, and a couple of rattlesnakes, many years ago. Unfortunately, she shot up all of the amo that Papa C brought back with the rifle. No, she didn't save the brass.

Oh well...

I did acquire a 6.5 Mauser cartridge from a friend and the round fits the chamber well, and action is smooth.
