WTK: The .350 Mauser as used by the "Greats" ?
      #65626 - 10/11/06 11:04 AM

Can anyone tell me about the .350 Mauser as used in the early days of African game hunting ? I cannot find much about the caliber but in some of my African books, they talk about such noteables as Bell, Judd, Cunningham, etc. using the caliber. Is there anyone currently hunting with this caliber? Thanks.

Hello fanofdbls,
in Europe we call this cartridge Mauser 9x57mm and it is a very good wood huntig caliber for short distances. You can produce good shells from 8x57 JS shells expanding to 9 mm (.350).

Hallo fanofdbls,

I shoot the 9x57 since 11 years in an GECO-M 98 Mauserrifle, build i 1931.
The rifle has an very slim half-stock and a orig. steel stock-pad. The whole gun weights just 2.9kg (=6.4lbs.), and that with an 23.5"-barrell.
The gun shots so good, that I shoot it with the original fixed-sight and no scope.
The results for wildboars are very satisfied. The longest deadrun-distance was 25yards by an 25lbs. boar. Normaly they get down by shot.
A good thing of this cartridge is the low pressure of max. 36300psi. Also that you can set the long 250gr. buillets so far out of the case, that the case has enough burningspace to get a good power. A lot of "modern" constructed cases like the short neckes .308, .358Win. or the .300Win.Mag. becomes a lot of problems with the loading of havey, long bulliets.
The 9x57 is one of the best cases ever made for the Mauser 98 action. After WW II here in germany the trend goes to the 7mm-cal. and so the 9x57 died.

I load the 250gr. Speer Grand-Slam to a velocity of 2000ft./sec. With this heavy buillets you can load the 9x57 till 2200ft./sec.
The case can you reform from new 8x57 cases, a reform-die is available by RCBS.

regards
Manolito

Well, ".350 Mauser" might also mean the .350 Rigby cartridge in a Mauser-actioned rifle. Some of the old books/authors weren't always very accurate or descriptive when describing the rifles and cartridges they used.

Anyway, here's an article about the 9x57 Mauser from African Hunter magazine:

The 9x57 Mauser
http://www.african-hunter.com/9x57_mauser.htm

Original ballistics for the .350 Rigby Magnum (rimless) were a .35 caliber 225 gr bullet at 2625 fps. The cartridge was introduced by the John Rigby company in 1908.

see: http://www.kynochammunition.co.uk/

Some pics of a .350 Rigby Magnum (in a Rigby rifle) on safari. Not my photos; more details can be found at:

http://www.accuratereloading.com/frsafari.html

"F.R., his Rigby and a zebra"

"F.R. used his 350 Rigby to bag this kudu bull at 275 yards."

"F.R. used his 350 Rigby Magnum, made by Rigby's in 1953. He used a load with the Woodleigh 250 grain soft point bullet, and 70 grains of IMR 4350. This load has a muzzle velocity of 2475 fps."

Bob,
Thanks for posting those pictures. I love the lines of that Rigby rifle.

They're referring to none of the above. They're speaking of the .400/.350 Nitro Express in slant box Mausers. The .400/.350 was sometimes chambered in double rifles, but was primarily used in slant box Mausers and falling block single shots. The rimless .350 Magnum came along later and was somewhat popular, but never as much so as the .400/.350. The .400/.350 used a 2 3/4" bottleneck case with a .35 caliber 310 grain bullet, with 43 grains Cordite for 2000 fps.

Have a look in Truesdell's comprehensive survey entitled 'The Rifle and its Development for Hunting'. You will find precisely no references to the .400/.350, a single hunter (Frank Melland) who used a Rigby-built .350 double (almost certainly a .350 No.2), and five hunters who used the .350 Rigby Magnum (Wm Rainsford, Leslie Tarlton, Alfred Pease, Hesketh Prichard, and J. Stevenson Hamilton).

Admittedly, there are holes in Truesdell's work, and he was restricted to those who wrote about their firearms (many hunters didn't even mention calibre), but it provides a good overview IMO.

Hallo,

yes the .350Rigby Mag. is a fine thing. Maybe I let build me next year a allweather-rifle with 27,5"-barrell for this calibre. It has arround 10-15% less power like my .340 Weatherby, but this with 30% less pressure, so for me the better cartridge. The long barrell burnes the last powder, so that the full powder-energee can handle on the buillet-boddom. An special coated barrell and reciever make it save for oxydation, or I try to get an .35Whelen stainless-barrel and let it recambered for the Rigby.
It would be my 9x57 for longer distance, and I hope I can used it sometimes for deer-stalking in the scotish Highlands or stonesheep in Canada or Middel-Asia with a fast 180-225gr. buillet.

regards
Manolito
