505 Gibbs on a `98?

Do the learned men on the forum think that the `98 is good enough for the job? Serious question.

Not beeing one of the learned ones, but isnt it the only one? well given a proper lenght to the action that is.

I have a .505 Gibbs, but it is made on a Brevex Mauser magnum action. I would feel that the standard Mauser action would be too short. I have heard that some Brno actions could be used.

Geo. Gibbs built 505's on Mauser magnum length actions. I would not advise a 98 action.

G&H and Hoffman also built a few .505s on original magnum mauser actions. Once in a while one turns up.

I agree with the guys above.
The 505 is likely too long for the std. large ring action. It is a length issue not a strength issue.
All original 505's were on the mag. action, in fact, IIRC, most of the modern magnum actions such as the Johansen are even a little bigger than the original Mausers.
If you cannot come up with a magnum Mauser action, you could always use a Ruger mag. action or a CZ mag action or simply buy a Ruger to rebarrel or try the CZ.
Better yet, build a 500Jeff and the Mag action becomes a moot point.

It's not just the action - the magazine and bottom metal will also be a big part of the picture. By the time you're done, you may wish you had gotten a more suitable action to begin with. If you're having a rifle built up, put the project off a year, save some more money, and get one of the Granite Mountain actions that is actully suited for .505. If you can find an old magnum Mauser action, snag it, but it won't cost much if any less than a GM. Prechtel in Germany also sells modern Mauser actions, through NECG. Super actions.

A "sort of" Mauser option, really more of a bybrid Winchester/Mauser, is the Montana Rifleman actions. Available in a real double squarebridge configuration, easily suited to .505, for about 1/3 the price of most other options.

I think if you're thinking of building a rifle on a standard 98 Mauser, to save money, you'll be disappointed with the outcome. Better to do it right and have something that is a joy forever.

The 98 action is too short.

A .505 Gibbs has a .640" rim diameter which when put on a .700" bolt like the CZ550 leaves very metal left on the side opposite the extractor. Better get an action with a 0.750" bolt diameter so that the large Gibbs rim can be handled properly. Granite Mountain, Reimer Johannsen and others make such an action.
