Yes, a little strange but not too much different from the 400/350 which it was originally chambered for.
Wouldn't need any work in the magazine or action just a rebore and rechamber.
I do think that conversion to the .375H&H Magnum makes more sense and was commonly done to these step-ring magnum Rigbys. Still prefer to leave it alone though...

What do you think Mehul?
THAT is what that Siamese Mauser is begging for! What a cool bolt gun that would be!

Wouldn't the Siamese mauser magazine (and action) length be way too short for a 9.3x74R?

Think it was a good original 400/350 flanged Rigby build pre WW1 on a two steps receiver magnum Mauser action with slanted magazine, butchered in recent times to make that hybrid.
New southpaw stock, modern Prechtl safety shroud, non-sense red plastic front bead, poor lettering, messed up bolt handle…what a pity!

"poor lettering,"

You noticed !!!

With all the good engravers in the UK,
I would have thought they could have
done better with it.

Nice rifle. The stock seems a little too fat for a mediumbored sporting rifle. The lines are ok, but in overall view the stockmaker haven´t been 100% faithfull to the original slim & trim pattern....but again he not wanted to, we don´t know. Mayby the customer asked for something like this. When all this said If I didn´t have a .333Jeffery I would mind have this gun in my safe as it is a good gun for hunting in a good caliber.

Agree. The timber in the stock is great but the stock leaves me cold.

I have missed something here so I will show my ignorance and ask. How do you know it was a 400/350 originaly?

rule 303 ...the action is a step ring ,as you can see the front ring steps down ,this was the first magnum action exclusively for the 400/350,the magazine box is slanted to take a rimmed cartridge which the 400/350 was ,lastly if its a 9.3x74 (rimmed) now ,you can be sure it once was a 400/350 rimmed ...paul

The Egun advertisement for this same rifle confirms that the magazine has been altered for trouble-free rimmed cartridge feeding. The text is:

geänderte Magazinzuführung für garantiert Störungsfreies zuführen der Randpatrone

I only know of one Oberndorf Mauser built for a rimmed cartridge, in .303 British, and that had an obviously slanted magazine.

As pjaln says, this rifle was originally firing the 400/350 RIMMED cartridge.
Not to be confused with the later introduced 400/350 Rimless Magnum which also utilized a magnum length Oberndorf Mauser action but not the slant box stepped ring version as this rifle has.

As for the possibility that the 9.3X74R cartidge may not fit in a Siamese Mauser... I am not sure. I figure that if the 416 Rigby can be shoehorned into a standard length Mauser, maybe it could fit.

Huvius,

Thank you, my friend! Always appreciate your suggestions, and I am the always grateful recipient of the beautiful Siamese custom rifle that you gave me. The many posts on these forums have a great inspirational quality and this post has a remarkable rifle, of course. A friend in the UK who is a dealer in fine guns has given me the contact of a gunsmith in Alabama who makes beautiful rifles quietly, and very reasonably. When the Brits rave about a gunsmith, I pay attention. Hope to make the trip to Clio this Spring and get started on my projects.

Thank you, again, my friend, and good hunting!

Done!

Just had another look at the photos. The calibre engraved on the scope ring looks like it says 9.5 not 9.3.

Someone stole my idea! Just.. Awhile before i had it :P

I was thinking 9.3x74 on a P14 or M1917, though the 400/350R could be done on either also.

Ah, rimmed cartridges in bolt guns, its a beautiful thing. *Thinks of Certus rifle*

It DOES say 9.5 on the scope ring and 9.3 everywhere else. I think if I'd paid out a lot of wonga for a rifle like that I'd have wanted a lot better job done on the engraving.

I think the "3" just has a little vertical cut at the start that almost connects with the middle so it looks like a "5"
A little hard to see on the picture.
