roebuck season 08
      #105003 - 14/05/08 03:50 AM

so spring is here and with that, roebuck season is rapidly approching. in denmark it is the 16 of may.

this tread is for all of us and the roebuck we take during 2008.

since im going to africa in august i have decided to use my heutier dbl. rifle only.

a few pics of a nice fork horned buck, that got away only because it is not season yet.

and another(sorry about the lousy pic)

so with my hopes for a good season, break a leg

best regards

peter

I have also seen some promising bucks. Not decided yet what rifle I'm going to use. Probably my 9.3 Sako or 30-30 Single shot.

Thanks for starting this Peter! Always love to see the roedeer!

Can you fellows give us a rundown on the natural habits of these critters? They are totally different than our deer/elk, etc.

IIRC, they lose their horns in the fall and regrow them to full size about now?

Breeding, gestation, fawning season?

9,3 i will try to do a quick run down of what i know:

yes they loos the horns every year late fall, and grow new and bigger for the first 6-8 years then the horns recline in size.(but the old ones are the most fun to hunt though)

young one

a bit older

in his prime

this was an old guy

the breeding starts in denmark around july through august, and they fawn in may. they stop the growth of the fawn during the winter time, so it dont take energy away from the roe(real clever they are).

in denmark they weigh between 20kg to 30kg

our season is for the roebuck 16 may to 15 june

Buck, roe and fawn season is 1/10 to 15/1

no bag limits, but we dont have public lands, where everybody can hunt, so this is a own or lease deal.

IM GOING OUT TOMMOROW

best regards

peter

Re: roebuck season 08 [Re: peter]
      #105351 - 17/05/08 07:34 AM

today was a good day.

a quick rundown, because im tired now.
I got up at 3:30 and was in the stables at 4:00 gettig scoop(one of my stallions) ready for the day.
we were in the forest at 4:45 about 20 minutes before legal shooting time. i was just humming along at a slow pace letting the horse eat a bit as we drifted further into the forest.

at 6:00 i got the first glimps of a decent buck, he was walking and feeding at a walk towards a small field in the forest, i followed him slowly while watching him, to determin, if i wanted to take this one now.

he had walked out onto the field grasing, standing around 100 yards from the forest border. i got off scoop and starte to stalk the last 50 yards to the border. i got a nice rest against a birch and waited for him to turn broadside, 30 sec. (that felt like a lifetime) later he precented the classic broadside shot and i let the bullet fly.

WHACK he fell over, like he was struck by mjoelner itself. i was really starting to like this rifle, it was leaving all the old and stupid remarks about dbl rifles lack of precision behind it in the dust from the 245 grains bullet.

i broke the buck and slung him over the shoulder and got on scoop again, and set the course for home while listening to the forest waking up in a flurry of sounds that no man can replicate.

i unloaded the buck, and put scoop in the stable with his morning feed, got a quick photo of the buck and me at the lawn, and went in to have breakfast with the kids before i had to drive them to kindergarten.

when i came back niicky could see that there was no possible way to get anything work related out of me today so she went and picked up her photo gear again(she was with me in the morning as well)
while i went to saddle scoop up again.

i took a different route this time riding along the forest egde, having fun and enjoying the day with niicky, untill i saw, out of the corner of my eye, a mangy fox trotting over the field. i dont mind foxes that much but if sick i put them down at once.

i dident even get off scoop, but took the shoot from the saddle.

fast photo before the digging the hole and making sure that the dogs couldent get to the body.
shot was taking at 63 yards.

riding further along, we came to another field where i knew that a nice buck were from time to time.
i saw him in the other end of the field, about 350 yards away.
so the stalk commenced with all the walking, standing, crawling and more crawling only halted by the freeze stance whenever he looked up at you.
finaly i was at a distance where i felt i could take him and feel proud about the stalk, by hands were burning up from the stinging nettles(forgot my gloves on the saddle) i sat up, rested my elbows on my knees and waited for him to stand at a better angle than the texas heart shot he precented me with.
again that rifle just worked its charms and the buck went down at once. i walked to the buck with a bittersweet notion that i reached my limit in that forest in one day and it would be a whole year before i could hunt there again.

i really love this picture

best regards

peter

Peter,

Congrats!

Thanks for the pictures. I've only been on drive hunts for roedeer. But I'm hoping to be back in France next early summer and I hope to try out roedeer stalking and stand hunting.

Cheers

Peter our season starts on May 1st, however I like roebuck hunting when summer is setting in - woods are in luxuriance, blistering green grass is doted with flowers - all that offering a nice background contrast for a summer coated orange roebuck - just personal - like hunting black winter coated chamois on a white snowy background

Peter I took him with 9,3x62 - 230gr GSHV - as always with old bucks it was a surprise for both of us - actually I was well over with my morning hunt it was 8 AM allready and I was wasting my time, walking a dog - waiting for a friend to show up for a range session...read my sign stuff

Here in France, at least in our region, the season starts the 15th may. In fact buck are active during May, cool down all June long and are in full swing rut from the 15th July to the 15th August, especially in August, depends on weather.
I was after a nice buck for three years and eager to connect with him at the opening of the season but no luck. The weather is too hot and wind whirling no end. I made only 2 attempts and will wait for the rut to outsmart this foxy buck. A piece of luck that my hunting partners let me this buck though I am refusing to harass him every week.
Good luck

So the danish season closed a few days ago and allthough i have been going out, on and off through the season nothing did pan out. either they were to young or the right shot did'nt present it self.
but the 15/7 was the last day, so i took the day off, and went hunting. the hunt was relative uneventful with me having a good idea about where and when the buck would show himself.

so i just parked my ass in a nice sunny spot, and sat there while roes and fawn were going around minding there own buisness.

at 20:30 he showed himself at a small patch of fir and i just sat down and put the crosshairs onto his shoulder, while resting my elbows on my knees.

at 20:37 the shot broke and he fell over with all contacts being shut down.

so danish roebuck season 2008 is over, it was great while it lasted and i still got it all, firmly resting in my memory, for me to enjoy over a campfire with others, or in my good chair in a late vinter night in front of the fireplace.

best regards

peter

P.S i got an idea the heads are at my mate's place to get the cooking and cutting done for the euro mounts, would it be a idea to show the trophys besides the just dead pic's, as to show the difference ?

Tracked this fella yesterday:

Hunter shot him frontal - grazed the shoulder and made a mistake - went to look for it with his unexperienced young dog - buck went for 200 m and lay down - he flushed him and let the dog loose - dog chased the buck and after 1/2 hour returned without a sign of finding - I came 4 hours later in full 32C - 90F heat - had no difficulties to the bed, but afterwards there wasn't a drop of blood to be seen - however buck went straight to the village and was recovered after additional 300m - dead. Bullet striked the shoulder joint and sent some fragments into chest cavity that were fatal. If guy would let the buck to rest for an hour we would pick him up on his first bed with even less sweat.
