Are you sure it's not in 375 Ruger?

Very nice indeed.

I have an Extra Finish Purdey shotgun (without the Game Scenes of course) and I love it - if I knew how to post pics I would.

Mickey,

I am quite certain that with the advent of the .375 Ruger, all Purdey owners will be rushing to have their rifles sleeved for the .375 Ruger cartridge. After all, isn't Wal Mart going to stock the ammo?

Owned a boatload of Purdey DR's over the years, all pre-war of course. Sorry for being totally honest, but that is one ugly engraving pattern, and why are they making guns coin finished these days? No hinged front trigger? Who ordered this albatros? Yuk!

A contemporary take on an older arts and crafts design stylistically unique to the engraver. Some men prefer blondes others brunettes.

I was not aware that Purdey and Weatherby used the same engravers

Probably an American !

577, It seems to me that most of the "obnoxious"
guns around have been ordered by Americans.

Look at the Gold encrusted Purcdey that was sold
at auction a while ago + heaps of others
(Dallas gun etc)

Personally I don't like half of the sideplate being a heavy scroll pattern then abruptly switching to the lighter game scenes, but I wouldn't call it ugly by any means.

I like the elephant engraving but not really the lion which is a bit too cartoon like.

However if I owned it I'm sure I could grow to love it!

From someone who owns a Jeffrey (with maybe a Square Nosed Birmingham Pussycat on it ???), that's a good one.

No disrespect John, but I think the Lion is better than what Jeffrey used to put on their guns.

Ha ha youare WRONG my friend!

My Jeffrey does not have a pussycat on it, but the scratchings of a drunk Birmingham carpenter who used a nail to scratch some sort of bovine, I believe a gaur!

"By gaur'd" I say, it is fine engraving!

Mine is a shooter, and I do not deserve anything fine. I think mine still has mud on the butt from the first buffalo hunt with it.

(but none on the metal BTW )

Nice rifle, but I must concur on the engraving. I am fortunate enough to own one Purdey, a 303 DR built in 1900 with the snap action underlever. A wonderful gun in near mint condition and with the very traditional (of course) Purdey style engraving. To me, that is what a Purdey double is about. I have a friend who is ordering a Grulla E95 in 9.3X74R. When asked for his choice of Purdey, Boss or H&H style engraving (which they will execute quite well) he chose Purdey. Why pay the money for such a lovely gun, and then eschew one of the best attributes of this excellent maker? Oh well, one man's taste, another's distate. Still, one very, very nice rifle. Dave

Are you telling me that the gold encrusted DRs that the Indians ordered are less "obnoxious" than the guns American's like?

Say it ain't so! You aren't a closet "gold and jewel" fan are you????

Obnoxious? Strong term, and since we are talking subjective issues here, let's step back for a second. Hey, I can send you a bunch of photos of the wood on German and Austrian guns that make them look like a totem pole done by a three year old on acid. Some of my friends find them high art. I find them ugly beyond belief. Of course my wife thinks my taste in music (I used to play oboe in a chamber group in college) is one step above self abuse, while I think her choice of music (country and western) is nauseating. One man's passion is another man's (or woman's) posion. Dave (However, as I think I said above, if I was to order a Purdey, I'd go with the more traditional Purdey style rose and scroll. You can get a much cheaper gun with what looks like the type of engraving on this Purdey for a whole let less. My opinion of course, but the one above is not to my taste.)

NitroX
I agree that the Lion does have a bit a Wizzard Of Oz type look about it but I too would be only too happy to have that rifle in my cabinet!

The abrupt contrast in engraving types is odd but does make it all the more unique.

Dave, I love the Totem pole analogy...funny stuff!

I saw a wonderful and rare round body DR, but it had what is referred to above as a 'cartoonish' lion. Why screw up an otherwise beautiful rifle with a thing like that is beyond me. Dave

There is something called English Scroll that looks nice, especially on a dark case coloring. Border engraving is a nice touch. Bottom line for me is no critters nor JR Ewing.
