In Search of The Proper Recoil Pad
      #75207 - 01/04/07 09:30 AM

Having recently returned from the range where I fired for the first time my newly purchased Merkel 140-2 DR in .470 NE, I've quickly come to realize that the existing 1/4" plastic butt plate is no friend of my shoulder. I've looked in vain for a proper-looking recoil (or is that 'decelerator?') pad: Brick red rubber, with black spacer, on the order of an inch deep. This would actually improve the LOP in my case.

A nice model I found was made by London Guns out of California; regretably, they are out of business and everyone seems sold out of the large size I would require. I want something that will both lesson recoil and have that classic 'English' look. Does anyone have a line on where I might look?

Thanks in advance!

Kim

Kynoch in the UK sell them.

It's called the Old English and is the orange colour
you are looking for.

Alternatively, try the Limbsaver - they really do
decrease felt recoil.

That was the lead I needed. Old English has been supplanted by S.W. Silver & Co. who apparently were OEM for H&H and many other pre-War DR manufacturers. They have several recoil pads in both red and 'English Orange'. And the good news is that I promptly found several US suppliers of Silver's products.

Thanks, 500Nitro! You post a question and 15 minutes later you've got an answer: What a great website!

"S.W. Silver & Co."

That was the name I couldn't think of (Sundaymorningitis !)
but I knew you'd see it on the Kynoch web site.

No probs, glad I could help.

You might also want to consider Pachmayr's Old English Decelerator (D752B). It is available in red with black spacer and is 1" thick. I believe it is more absorbing than the Silvers pad.

A block of concrete is more absorbing than a Silvers pad.

I like limbsavers and Pachmayrs.

The stock pad on Rugers and other factory rifles is virtually worthless.I am not especially fond of Winchesters red pad either.

I think you can get by with a so-so pad up to 300 mag, past that it can definitely affect your follow up shots.

Shooting a 470 without a pad? Interesting. On a 470 NE I think I would put the pad on prior to shooting the gun.Increasing the LOP may even improve followup shootability.I wonder- could shooting with/without a pad affect the regulation??

Occasionally restocking and / or changing the pad over
can affect regulation - it has been known to but not often.

Besides the old style orange pad available from a couple of sources, does anyone else make a 1.5 inch pad suitable for a double?

I have two Merkel double rifles, and the 470NE has a Kick-EZE on it, while the 9.3X74R has a pachmeyr decellarator. The decelarator comes in the treditional red rubber, and like others here I think it is a much better recoil pad that the classic "SILVERS", and I like it better than the Kick-EZE as well. The Kick-eze works fine, but has a habit of coming apart quite easily! Merkel doubles are off the shelf rifles, and it is fitted for a temparary butt plate so the length of pull can be adjusted to the owner when a recoil pad is installed.

bradhe;
Google up galazan.com and get into their catalog.
They offer a copy of a Silvers pad in 1.5". Should work
OK, it's just a bit harder than a steel buttplate.
