How to set up my 9,3x74 Chapuis ???
      #66983 - 14/12/06 04:46 AM

OK, Here's what I'm thinking of ordering from Dale as part of the AR group buy and I'd like some input...

1) RGEX 9,3 regulated at 50 meters w/ 286 grain Norma load
2) no engraving at all
3) case hardeneed receiver and triggers (with blued safety, action lever, PG cap, and bbls obviously)
4) splinter fore-end if possible (don't care for the beavertail fore-end)
5) 26" tubes (should I or shouldn't I?)

Is there anything I'm forgetting besides the scope mounts? I don't know if I can swing those at the moment without downgrading to the UGEX which I don't really want to do. I want the higher grade wood, cheekpiece, PG Cap, extended trigger guard, etc.

JTG

John
How are you doing?

I recommend you get the scope mounts in the initial purchase.

How much extra are the 26" bbls. My Chapuis has 24" bbls and I find it perfect.

PS my 450/400 has 26"bbls and my 450 No2 has 28" bbls which on those frames I find them perfect as well.

I'm curious about the 26" barrels too. One of the reasons I've haven't ordered a 9.3 Chapuis for myself is the 23.6" coach gun barrels. Chapuis has never offered 26" DR barrels that I'm aware of. Are you sure they're available?

Hi Tony,

Life is good. Getting ready to head home for the holidays. Got a nice 6 week vacation for Christmas that I intend to enjoy! Hope all is well with you!

All,

WOOPS! I just looked at the site and the barrel option is 550 or 600mm...not 650mm. Someone should still contact Dale and see if 26" tubes are available as an option. I'm not sure if they would be an extra charge or not. Here's another quick question....If ordering scope mounts and longer barrels meant you would have to forego the higher grade wood, longer trigger guard, PG cap, and cheekpiece...would you make that sacrifice or order the higher grade gun with shorter barrels and get the scope mounts later?

Another question. I need to find a place to be fitted with a try-gun in December/January before leaving again for Egypt. Any suggestions in the Chicago area (gonna be there for business) or Utah (visiting family) ot The Yukon (business again) or elsewhere? As you can see, my vacation is going to be a busy one.

Thanks,

John

Just my opinion, but I believe if you add a scope on after the fact you're going to have a crap shoot if the rifle will regulate the same with the scope if it was regulated without the scope.

Nice wood, PG cap, checkpiece, etc are all cosmetic, I'd take a good scope mount over all of those. I think a scope really make the 9.3x74r a much more useful rifle. I love mine! I'd only get one without the scope if I was only going to use it for driven hunts, or a dedicated brush gun.

For gunfitting, though its a bit out of your way, I'd recomend Bryan Bilinski at Field Sport up at Traverse City Michigan. I was going to a conference a few years back in Chicago and I had planned to catch a plane and do a fitting with him up there on a day trip. Turns out I did it with Bryan at a SxS shoot closer to home, but it can be done from Chicago. I'd also recomend Chris Batha and Keith Lupton, though they are far from your listed locations...

My rifle was regulated without the scope. With the scope it shoot just fine.
I would forget about 26" bbls.

My Chapuis is the basic UGEX.

If I had it to do all over again I would have bought a little higher grade, still with color cased hardened reciever, no animal engraving I prefer scroll, nicer piece of wood and an extra set of bbls in 20 ga.

However it MUST have a scope.

A scope makes the 9,3 double the equal to any scoped 9,3x62 or 375 H&H.

For a working gun for buffalo here in South America I find the beavertail forend perfect.

And I find the 24" barrels perferct too, like NE450 said.

I wonder about the case hardened receiver. Where is that option in the catalog? How much is that?

John

After you led the charge on the first group order and did so much work, I was surprised you didn't get in on it.

Re the case colored reciever, I ordered mine that way, and should have it shortly. I got a note this weekend from Dale that the last three rifles are due in on 12/18, and he hopes to have them through customs by Friday. I will post pictures on AR when I get it.

When I inquired about CC, I was told that it was not available with engraving, and also that the old scroll engraving was not available (I really don't like their animal engraving). Recently, I have seen several people mention that neither is the case, but these comments have all referred to the RGEX. I don't know if the situation has changed or if the original comments referred only to the UGEX, which I ordered (with ejectors). I think the smooth action with CC will be attractive, and much to be preferred over the animal scenes, but if I were doing it again, I would likely be tempted to go with the RGEX if it meant I could get the scroll engraving and CC.

Is this catalog available on the web? Is there an option for a splinter fore-end and custom length of the stock?

Here is the link for the Chapuis rifles:
http://www.chapuis-armes.com/Model-REX.html
I am a newbie here but recently joined Dale in his group purchase on another forum. Dale informed me this year the UGEX is avaliable with floral engraving on both sides (which I ordered). I also ordered mine with the pivot scope mount in 9.3x74R with no cheek piece (I am left handed)

I ordered my 9.3 with color case, pivot mount, cheek piece, 24" bbls. and upgraded but straight grained wood. The fancy wood looks better but breaks easily in comparison to the straight grain.

I like the color case.

Also had the rifle factory regulated to a 1.5 - 6 Swarovski illuminated scope.Factory regulation was poor. JJ has now had the rifle attempting to re-regulate or should I say regulate since late summer. It will be a fantastic rifle once I am able to use it as more than a single shot. Fortunately I've needed no more than one shot to do the job.

The removable scope is a must have.

Could you give us some more details on the factory regulation? How much did it spread, which load etc.

338,

The handload was a velocity and bullet weight duplicate of factory loads used to regulate the rifle. Used my Ohler 33 chrono to match speed per JJ. Individual barrels are very accurate. At 100 yards there is a 3.5" + diagonal spread. The left barrel shooting high and right.

My 1909 Greener 450/400 3 1/4" with open sights does better than that.
