Reloading .470 on a Dillon

A recent post in another thread mentioned a conversion to allow reloading .470 on a Dillon 550. When I looked into this a couple of years ago, it wasn't possible, and I ended up buying another press.

Any further info on this?

I regularly load my .416 Rigby on my Dillon AT500. Same as a 550B, but I don't use an automatic powder measure, although I do use automatic primer feed. The only problem you will have is you will probably need to have a current shell plate machined to accept the .470. Also you might want to get a set of Dillon lock rings to use on your dies as they are smaller diameter and don't rub against one another when you are putting the dies in the die holder.

You can load ;but crimping
will probally have to be done
on a single stage.
I had problems with the magnum
powder measure. It was not
accurate. I converted it to
the old bar return system
with springs. This allowed
the measure to have improved
accuracy. The "new improved"
way could be off 10%. The
modified measure would be off
.10 of a grain if at all.

k80...sorry a bit of confusion here....if you can seat the bullet in the Dillon, why do you need a single stage press to crimp it? It is basically the same length die used in crimping and seating. I use a separate die for crimping my .416 (actually I use separate crimp dies for all my rifle calibers) and the length of the two in the die holder is identical. Worst case scenario would be to have a machinest take a little off the bottom of a crimp die and then chamfer it so the case would go in smoothly. I may be missing something here, don't mean to start an argument, just very confused..

The dies I used were Hornaday. They
have a sleve that falls below the die
that supports the case neck.I size,decap,
and clean the cases prior to using the
550 to prime,charge,seat. To crimp 375
I had to use another brand of die. I
could adjust the Hornaday to seat;but
not crimp. I like the Hornaday so I
am going to try the Lee "factory crimp"
die. Since you will be working with a
overall length 3/10 inch longer die
selection is critical. I think at one
time Dillon offered a 470 shellplate.

The Lee factory crimp is too long.
It looks like I can shorten it with
out hurting the crimp.

You can load the big Nitro cases on about any press if you fiddle fart around with the case and bullet, but it sure is nice to load them on my RCBS A-2 Single stage press where I have all the room in the world for even a 50 BMG case and bullet....

Has anyone used the Hornady
Lock-n-load(progressive) press.
It appears to have lots of room for
big stuff.
This Hornady press could be
the answer. I use the Lock-
n-load power measure now on
a 550 just for the accuracy
and have been pleased. I
measured the opening 4 3/4".
