Beautiful modern Damascus barrels

After many years, I recently contacted Mr Per Billgren the owner of Damasteel in Sweden, manufacturer of Damascus blanks and they now produce rifle and shotgun barrels using their steel in Austria. For those interested in these beautiful creations, the websites are Damasteel and Gobec Austria

For those who favor the nostalgiac, vintage look the Damasteel barrels are a dream come true and they are proof to modern pressures! That's a combination you just can't beat. For those in the bespoke gun class, contact your gunbuilder about them. You won't regret it, especially if you are a hammergun fan!

p.s. There is a US importer of damasteel. I've emailed him to see if he handles barrels as well as knives and knife-making blocks. He doesn't list such on his website.

Caspian Arms' 1911 Damascus slides are made by Damasteel. It would be nice if someone brought the Gobec barrels here as well. The best part, for those who could afford this is that Damasteel have developed a prototype steel for double gun actions. Now if only I won the Lotto, I would get myself a double rifle and a matching pair of shotguns made from this material!

Oh, be still my heart! Never in the remaining years of my life would I be able to afford it but . . . just imagine an Abbiattico e Salvinelli self-cocking hammergun with action and barrels of Damasteel all chased and gold-wire enlaid. It brings tears just thinking about it!

I agree - it would certainly be among the most beautiful guns ever made.

I'd much rather have one than have anything else but that would, of course, be dependant on my winning a Lotto as I said!

Do you mean ( Obviously you do) that these barrels can stand the pressures of modern loads? Can you please eloborate a bit more?Again, what could be the price, say, for a 12 bore double or a 30/06 bolt rifle barrel? Thanks -

I'm sure they are using steel that sufficently strong to be used with nitro loads. No trick to that.

I couldn't find any reference to how they delt with or determined the steel was occlusion free. That was the weakness of old Damascus steel.

These barrels are Damascus pattern, not wire-wrapped Damascus. The steel is, from what I can determine from the website, sintered powder technology. Now, I'm not enough of a metalurgist to be able to explain what that means, but will take on faith that if it passes European proof house approval, it must be proof against modern smokeless powder pressure. Just wish the US had a similar system instead of relying on vampire lawyers! I just received an email from DamasteelUSA saying that he was checking on barrels. Apparently he has no twitches about ordering some for anyone who wants them. Wouldn't that be a wonderfull way to resurrect Gram'pa's old Parker?

Powder Metal? Wow and they can make it into a gun barrel. I would have to know a lot more about there technique before I would want a rifle barrel made of that stuff. I would love to know know a lot more about that stuff it's beautiful. They must have a way of dealing with occlusions and the strength issues, and harmonics...

I gotta know more!!!!

It is a process by which they use the powdered metal over the barrel as I understand it, or rather have been told, I think they pound it in...but I don't know this as fact, just rumor..

To anyone who is interested, I have received a fairly extensive catalogue from Per Billgren detailing their barrels and the technical characteristics of their steel extensively. The catalogue also offers the possibility of making scope rings etc out of the metal. In addition to the catalogue there are also company newsletters and technical information.

I would be happy to send this information to anyone who is interested.

Their product is good looking but different from the classic Damascus. In classic Damascus, one starts with strips of alternating iron and steel about 1/4" wide and long. These are welded together making a solid piece maybe 1/4" thick by maybe 1/4" wide and long. Next a number of these pieces (number varies but lets say 3 rods) are then twisted. These pieces are alternately with right and left handed twist. They are then hammer welded together so that they new piece is about 1/4" thick by a half inch or so wide. The resulting piece is then heated and wrapped around the mandrell and welded together. There are lots of variables in width, number of strips, etc.
