.600 Nitro Express being given away!
      #29297 - 11/04/05 07:56 AM

Heym .600 NE double. Was $38K. NOW $29K. NEW condition. This gun has been for sale for 2-3 years, and has not moved, hence the discount.

If I did not already know that a .600 NE is beyond my ability, I would be all over this one.

Hello 500 grains,

It may be a bargain but who really needs a 600 nitro? I have done a lot of shooting in Africa with a 470 never felt that I needed more gun. If it were an old English gun then it would be worth trying to own it.

Hey 500,

After reading your recent description on firing one of these monsters, I really don't want one!

It is a fantastic high quality rifle!

But who needs a low penetration-cartridge with monster recoil like 600N.E.??

"low penetration cartridge"??!! Compared to what?!
Don't believe everything you read, Safarischorsch. Sure, there were some factory-loads with guilding-metal FMJs getting around after the second war, and the ill-informed may have blamed the cartridge rather than the bullets for low penetration, but squash a steel-jacketed solid or monolithic into the front of one of these cavernous cases, and you have all the penetration you could possibly need!

Recoil, yeah. No argument there.

500grains is right though, a quality .600 NE sidelock ejector for under $30K sounds like a fair deal to me.

Well just take a 9,3x62, 9,3x64, 375H&H, 458Lott, 460Weatherby, 416Rigby...
They all outpenetrate the 600N.E. by far if you use tough, well designed monolitic solids like GS-Custom for example.

.................................... And you know this how?

Regardless of your percieved lack of penetration with the 600NE, one needs to think not only of the penetration, but the hellasious punch attended by a 1000 gr bullet hiting the body, or forehead of an elephant or buffalo. Not to mention the empact on the shoulder of the shooter!

I will agree with you on the question you ask, "WHO NEEDS A 600NE............" The Hyem is a very well made rifle, and the price is sure more than right for anyone who is considering the purchase of a 600NE double rifle. I have no need for a 600NE of any make, so the fact that is not Brittish is no drawback for me! IMO, the 600NE, and 700NE doubles are simply "LOOK AT ME" toys, that nobody can handle properly in the hunting fields, and are far less usefull than a clean little 450NE 3 1/4" double of about 10 pounds weight!

The momentum of the 600N.E. is less than a big hammer when you swing him on the elephants skull! The elephant just will gett angry.

Even my the momentum of my 8x68S that hit a bull of a highland close to the brain deafened the bul just about 10 seconds and that is not a big bore! The place of the bullet and the penetration is the main thing for a bGr cobined with the biggest Diameter you can handle.

Here you can calculate the penetration of the different cartridges:

Yeah, nice price on that thumper. But, nowheres does it say how much it weighs. It seems Heyms are a bit light for caliber. I wouldn't want to get migraines or risk retina detachment with it being way too light.

I don't know the weight, but judging by the medium meaty appearance, I will guess 14 pounds. 16 pounds would be more comfortable shoot by very difficult tocarry.

Rather have comfort shooting it than developing a monster flinch every time that thing gets lit off. Besides, I'll just have to get a gun-bearer.

It would be really easy to find a gun bearer to carry this rifle. Just tell him that at the end of the safari he gets to keep the gun.

As a user of .600's 30 years ago, I would ask how mauch penetration do you need to reach the vitals of a bull elephant or buffalo? Not once did I see too little penetration. Always enough. Yes, others may and will out penetrate the .600 in some test mediums. The .577 will go deeper, but how deep do you need to go? From having used both I can tell you from the effect on animals that have the CNS or brain missed, the .600 will do what a .577, .470 or .416 and others won't do.
Yes the Heym is probably too light. 14 will work, 16 is better. I had a 13+ Churchill that was tough to handle, but easy to carry, 16- H&H was much easier to handle, but tiring to carry.

Mystic wishes not more!

Read the stories of Hans Schomburgk who hunted over 40 years in africa with a 600 nitro! He fell down at his ass because of the 600NE and the elephant still attacked him!

On elephant there are some stories that show that there is not more effektive momentum than shooting other cartridges, but sometimes not enough penetration.

I would always prefer a 416 rigby or remmag or the new 500/416 N.E. of course only with well designed solids (GS Custom, Bridger...)

Safarischorsch

If he used a 600NE for 40 years he must have liked it a little bit.

African Hunter
Which do you prefer for elephant hunting, with a buff or two thrown in, a 600 Nitro or a 577 Nitro?

Nothing wrong with prefering a 416 or whatever but if you think a .600 isn't a elephant gun in spades with modern bullets, your sadly mistaken. and its the damndest buffalo gun I have ever seen, it literally rolls them up in a ball with 4 ft. sticking straight up in the air...that said I wouldn't have one, they kick to much.

First of all I do not think 29K for a 600 German Nitro Express is giving it away, in fact this price is quite high.
Now about the 600 Nitro. I have a Thys 600 sidelock ejector that weights 12 lbs 6 oz. I load a Woodleigh 900 grain solid with 160gr of IMR4831 and velocity of 1970 ft per second. I shot a Bull Elephant in Zimbabwe with a frontal head shot and the bullet penetrated 37". How much more penetration does one need. It killed the elephant. That penetrated a .623 hole more than one yard of bone and flesh. Yes this rifle has recoil.........

Expertshooter

What load development have you used in your Thys .600.

I am presently having a .600 built here in the U.K, it is on a boxlock action to have intercepting sears, finished weight wil bein the 16lbs class for the very reason of recoil.

I have Horneber and Kynoch brass in addittion to Romey and Kynoch factory ammo and a supply of both the Woodleigh soft and solid bullets.

I had been given a starting load to try of Rel 22 using the Fed #215 primer.

I would be intesrested to hear your thoughts and findings on this calibre, especially regulating distances and grouping ability etc

Hi Clark

The rifle is being built by Trevor Proctor in Wilmslow England.

Barrels are from Ferlach and the action is from an old unamachined forging left over from the old London firm of John Wilkes.

It is a boxlock and will have both intercepting sears and ejectors, completion time still a good 12 months away.

Trevor is a good friend and well known in U.K and African riflemaking terms, he has built or has under manufacture around 7 further doubles from 7mm to my .600, the bulk being either .375 or .470.

I need to get some load development under way to provide ammo for the regulating stage. I am due to put some loads together and wil ltake them down to Kynoch for pressure testing, I hope to duplicate present manufactured Kynoch loads.

JT

That sounds like some project! If the builder supplies you with some photos of his work, I would love to see you post them so we can all follow it's progress!

What type of engraving are you going with? Have you comissioned anyone specifically to do it?

The price is not too high!

It is one of the best DGR you can get for that money.

Very accurate, very well balanced, best materials, fine stocking and sights very good technical equipment with fine finish.

So what is too high here compared to a W&R or simply a No-Name Ferlach???

I do not like 600, 500 and 577 N.E. because an ordinary 375H&H outpenetrates them but this gun is not too expensive.
