Philipp Reeb Double

A friend of mine recently purchased a double rifle of "Philipp Reeb" in 11.5m X 50. Can anyone enlighten me on this rifle? He is also looking for brass for this cartridge

Though there were once at least six differently shaped cartridges with that caliber and case length, five of them based on the Mauser M71 MB base, all of them were obsolete before 1900. As Philip Reeb set up under his own name in 1911 at the same Bonn address as his J.J.Reeb family business. such a chambering is not very likely. You will not get around making a chamber cast to establish bore, base, rim and neck diameters as well as shoulder position and rim recess depth. Also, please post photos of all markings on and under the barrels. Anyhow, you will have to make the cases yourself. Only with all informartion available it will be possible to recommend a basic case and bullet source.

aromakr,

Please see if you can get some photos from your friend of general views of his Reeb DR, to include barrel and action stamps, and post them for us. As Kuduae said, your friend should make a chamber cast or have a chamber cast made in order to determine all of the aforementioned dimensions, enabling others to help your friend move forward with finding brass, bullets and load recommendations.

May see the trademark REBO.

Apparently Johann Jakob Reeb hung out his shingle in Bonn in 1870 and was at Drayek 6 in 1877. Being born in 1843, he should have been on his walkabout in 1867 when he arrived in Bonn, where he must have worked for a local gunsmith(Ewald Becher - acquired business in 1870/1872?) until he hung out his gun making shingle(makes you wonder if he married the daughter of Ewald Becher). For now I don't know which court, but in 1877 he was dubbed Hofbüchsenmacher. I believe it was at the 1881 International Hunting Exhibit in Kleve, Netherlands that J.J. Reeb won a silver medal for his wares. During this same time he advertised as have a myriad of quality sporting weapons with tubes/tubesets from Britian & Liege noting his address was at Münsterplatz 17a. So early on he established sourcing lines to Britian and Liege and the Liege theme continues pretty much unabated.

He had 2 sons, Phillip & Hans/Johann Jakob, Junior?? Hans was born in 1883 and obtained his master's brief in 1911, about the same time when Johann Jakob Reeb retired in 1909. The Boys Reeb continued the firm for a couple of years and in 1911 they divorced and split the Reeb gunmaking sheet. On his walkabout, Hans gained experience in shops of the skilled craftsmen in Liege & Suhl. Typically at the age of 24 one would attain the rank of master but in 1907 & 1908 Hans went on a couple of expeditions with Alexander Koenig to Greenland & Svalbard. By 1913 Prince Frederick William dubbed him supplier to the court. In 1937 a Carl Gehtenberg, brother-in-law of Hans?, purchased the concern while Hans was a gunsmith at Potsdam to support the war effort. After WWII Hans Reeb used the trademark Reebo at a hunting haberdashery store at the corner of Poststrasse & Münsterstrasse. I believe it was referred to as Reebo-Haus.

Info on Phillip Reeb is scarce & it appears at some point he was appointed Hoflieferant or Hofbüchsenmacher. Possibly split of the Boys Reeb will explain the trademarks Rebo & Reebo.

J.J.Reeb became Hoflieferant =gunmaker to the court of:
Prince Heinrich of Prussia, younger brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1887
Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, son of Wilhelm II, 1903
Prince Chlodwig of Hessia,1904
Duke Carl Eduard of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha (and until 1917 also Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence, Baronet Arklow and Prince of Great Britain and Ireland), 1904
After Johann Jakob Reeb's retirement in 1909 Philipp Reeb was appointed to Kronprinz Wilhelm.

Ok, here are the measurements from the chamber cast.

bullet dia .442

neck dia .462

case length 2.04

rim dia .590

shoulder dia .492

head dia .503

neck length .636

length to shoulder 1.34

rim thick .064

Does anyone know what cartridge this is and what base case is available that they can be made from?

the 45-70 comes semi close to your rim base measurements.

Got into Dixons European sporting cartridges pg 100 & the 11.5x51.5R Target is about the closest comparison I have come up with so far

GSP53: Lorenz case #182 shown only in the 1886 Export catalog as a target cartridge, dimensions taken from the catalog and are only approximations.
