When you see older rifles doubles ,singles ,bolt rifles E.G English guns 1920s etc, How much were they in todays money ? say how many weeks average wages would buy a Farquarson or double rifle ? have they got more expensive or less ? in averages wages or stayed mostly the same ?

No idea how much they were in today's money, but, back then as now, the top of the shelf stuff wasn't cheap. A British monarch once commented that Boss guns were too expensive for him, and that was when the British empire was the biggest in the world!

We had a very good thread about this same subject a while back.
I will see if I can find where it is.

Not the same as vintage Brit. guns, but I remember a comment to the effect that a Colt Single Action Army.45 cost a $20 gold Double Eagle at the turn of the 20th. century and it takes the same gold Double Eagle to buy one today.

So how many Sovereigns did it take to buy a Purdey best game gun in 1900 and what is the value of the same gold Sovereigns today?

According to the 1910 Holland catalouge on this site, a Royal double rifle cost 75 guineas.

In 1910 that was about 78.75 pounds or the equivalent of 393.75 american dollars.

In 1910 the average american income was $750.00 a year. so buying a H&H royal would cost the average american about 52% of his yearly income...

In 2010 the Average american income is $46,000.00 per year. (ahh, inflation!)

So, all things being equal, a H&H royal should cost around $24,000.00.

However - much has changed between 1910 and now, and there are many factors that contribute to the incredibly exponential price increase of a modern H&H royal...

I think we can all agree , a "London Best Double" has always been VERY Expensive !!!!! Back in the day only the "Royals" had doubles in Africa. Most of the Farmers and Ranchers shot everything with a "Lee Speed" or something similar . Some of the "White Hunters" had doubles , but if they did it was most likely a "Birmingham Boxlock" and a very lucky few had a "Royal" given to them as a tip at the end of a Safari . Mostly it was the visiting sportsman who had the Best Grade double. I agree with Wes350 "much has changed between 1910 and now..."

Using GDP per capita ( a good measure of how "affordable") and staying in pounds sterling 79 pounds sterling in 1910 is approx now 53,700 GBP, using purchasing power it is about 39,000 GBP. Canīt comment on dollars, there used to be about 5 to the pound back then !! for calculations see http://www.measuringworth.com

best, Mike
