Hunting with hammer-guns in 2010, a no-go?
      #160398 - 13/05/10 11:59 PM

What are your opinon on using the old hammerguns for big-5 today? Thinking of .400 and up, top or underlever.

Is it worthwhile, or should they be retired?

Hey,

There are men hunting with pistols and archery. If it is sound and reliable - I would.

What difference does it make where the hammers are located?

I thought a DR which cocks when you brak it as most hamerless doubles do, are quicker and easier to use than a hammer-double? Slow second shot?
The ahmmergun is probably better concerning safety to others...
I suppose it pretty much comes down to prectice, or? I'd like to hear from the ones wha has actually done a fair bit of hunting with these guns.

I might try to swap a Merkel lux .470 to a the earlier mentioned Jeffrey .400" hammergun with toplever.

Would that be a sound descision?

The reason for doing this is that I find my .470 stying a lot in the gun cabinet, not beeing used (having a doublerifledrilling in 2x9,3x74R). I bought the Merkel to be a working gun, something it surely isn't.

I'd also like something classic and preferably british.
It will be used once or twice for an elephant or two, then probably some mooosehunting when the weather is good back home.

Would it be stupid to trade in a Merkel that works perfectly well to a hammergun like the Jeffrey?

How would you compare the value of the two guns?

I'd do that swap in a moments notice! You'll shoot the Jeffery alot more than the 470 and if it's either of the 450/400 Nitro's it'll kill anything just as dead.

The 470 is a model with upgraded wood, no swivel studs, straight stock, lion and rhino on the sides, boxlock.

You reckon you'd just swapwith the other rifle as long as it is in sound working order??

Hm.. that's food for thought...

bonde;
Hunting with that hammer gun could be hazardous to your health. Better to let me purchase it, try it out, and then let you know the results. Stick to your Merkel lux .470 and leave the hammer guns to those of us who don't have any children!

I love the old hammerguns. I hunt with a Pedersoli Kodiak now. I a breaking myself in for the time that I can get (afford) an old English hammergun. Maybe 577BPE if I lucky enough to ever find one.

I will be hunting Alaska with hammer guns. My drilling and SXS combos have hammers. They are perfect for combo hunting here.
My Hammer smoothbores are great game guns as well.
I would have no hesitation.

I hunt with hammer guns. The last three deer I have taken were with hammer guns.

What's not to like about them?

Point taken!

I just had the idea that they would be a lot slower to use, and revealed hvow little I konw about them

I'd rather have a Hammer-gun than one of the new ones with cocking device, as i think they're equally quick to use, and got better looks.

Hammer-guns sure are lovely rifles, no doubt!

My only double rifle with hammers is a Pedersoli .58 BP ML, but I grew up shooting side by side shotguns with hammers.

Carrying the gun loaded but uncocked, safer than a normal safety device, and similar I suppose to a modern decocking device.

Somewhat slower to cock both hammers for shooting but not a serious problem unless I suppose something big and nasty is a split second away from stomping you ...

"Second shot slower"? No reason if both hammers were cocked when shooting the first barrel.

I love shooting shotguns with hammers and am looking for a "new" vintage one to shoot clays with. Also if the price was right would not say no to a double rifle with hammers, say a .450 BPE (for medium game) or something similar or even a NE version.

As for swapping a .470 Merkel for a Jeffery .400? Well that is a personal decision based on any loss of $$$ value of the swap compared to original purchase price, which rifle will keep its value or improve its value in the mid or long term, what you will be hunting predominantly or intending to hunt (eg you mentioned elephant), pure personal preferences - which you like better? etc

Is the Jeffery .400 a NE proofed rifle?

If hunting elephant I personally would stick to the.470 without hammers.

If hunting Scandinavian moose or European boar (etc) a .400 might be fun to use.

Curl,

You have some wonderful rifles buddy. I LOVE seeing them!

As to 470 Merk {hammerless} vs. old Brit hammer rifle in

.41 caliber, for elephant my vote is for 470 NE hammerless.
