Any ever tried loading 400 grain 450/400 bullets in .405 Winchester?

Yep, Hornady loaded some for Craig Boddington's daughter. She took a cape buffalo with the 400 grain, no problem.

John Barsness wrote an article in Handloader a few years ago about the 405. He worked up loads with 400 gra Woodleighs in a Ruger #1 that matched 450-400 tropical loads, ie, about 2000 fps. Seems to be an easy thing to do in a Ruger. Older 405's might not handle the extra pressure as well. Bob

I think modern .405's {Ruger} twist rate is 1/14 and long heavy 400 grain bullets should stabilize.

Original 85 SS's and 95 levers were 1/32 IIRC. I am not sure long bullets would stabilize well in such a slow twist, particularly in very cold weather.

Would be interesting to see the hole shapes in a target at 300 meters on a cold day.

My #1 is a 1-B that Douglas rebarreled to .405 with a .411" barrel in 12" twist. I can load the Woodleigh 400gr bullet crimped in the cannelure without problems. Using a tad more Varget than the Hodgdon's online data lists for that bullet I get right at 2,050fps and groups just under an inch at 100 yards.

Biggest animal I killed was a Blue Wildebeest and the bullet sailed right thru, I've also shot a couple of whitetail deer with no drama.
