Making steady progress....

I have the stock bedded in and got the barrel in this week. I am having a local machine shop thread the barrel end and the monoblock....should be ready by Friday.

I have a few coats of oil on the stock but need about 4 more to fill the grain and get a thin layer on top.

I really wasn't sold on the first trigger guard I made as it needed to blend into the neck of the stock quicker. I have always liked this shape( not sure what the proper name is ), so I made a new one...

and a couple of angle shots of the rough shaped action. It is at 120 grit from my belt grinder, but will eventually be stoned to 600 grit before engraving.

Very nice! And that trigger guard will prevent it slapping against your middle finger in full recoil

I am very close to machining parts for my rimfire prototype. I've made a couple of wood model action bodies to work bugs out of my programs without wearing out cutters and wasting expensive steel. Anyway, I am designing the barrel assembly ( barrel profile, ribs and sight bases) and am curious to hear your opinions on barrel length for a 22lr double. I have read that anything over 16 inches offers no benefit for velocity. That being said, for the versatility of my design to be used with 22wmr and 17hmr rounds, I am leaning towards using 18" or 20" barrels.

Please let me know your opinions!!

IMO, it may not matter - whatever looks right - and you seem to be as good a judge as any on that.

Hi Bailey, merry Xmas to you and family, I think any shorter than 20" might look a bit unbalanced ? I guess when you put the steel next to the stock the proportions will become clearer. best, Mike

bailey

I would consider going to 22 or maybe 23 inch barrels. Since the stock is for a grown up, to balance the looks I think you will need a longer barrel.

Look at some of the 410 SXS shotties to get an idea of aesthetics. This would be particularly true if your action can step up to a .223 or so also.

You will get no complaints about 24" barrels from anyone. That's your safest bet.

Mr Bradshaw-

I also support the suggestion to go with 24" barrels, for the sake of appearance and balance.

Cheers

I machined a wood model of my rimfire double action. It is scaled to a 28ga frame size for future endevours ( hint hint). Working the bugs out of the programs is best done using wood as it saves $$ on cutters and steel. I will be working on the prototype steel action beginning next week.

Hope y'all enjoy, let me know what you think!!

Oh Good Lord! A clamshell .22LR double.

I think it's fantastic!

One question - should it be a .410 frame rather than 28ga.? Most of the
Continental double rifles chambered in medium bores (up to 9.3x74R) are
built on 28ga. frame size. An example: Curl's Francotte 9x57R SLE

Of course, the 28ga. size will result in a full-size DR rather than a tiny one
as often seen chambered in .22LR.

For .22... consider doing the action in Ironwood...

Bill,

I will be at DSC all day Friday. Didn't know about the dinner, and have other plans for the night. Next year I would love to attend. I will have my single shot there, and the model in teh picture. I have drooled over the little Hoffer too many times to count. He is an exceptional maker.

Huvius,

The action measures 1.76" top to bottom and 1.8" across the face. Each barrel will measure .88" at the face.

Curl,

I do believe you are right about the action size needing to be that of a .410. I took the model to the DSC show yesterday and showed it to Doug Turnbull. His imediate reply....in a cansiderate but firm manner was "it's a little big for a 22"......I replied...."it's scaled to 28ga size"....Doug replied..."it's a little big for a 22 and will be too heavy". So, when experience speaks....me listens :-) You, Doug and a couple of others have indicated the same concern. I originaly had the action drawn at 410 size but was concerned with it having a "toy" feel. After handling several .410s at the show, I believe you guys are right. Luckily it is easy at this point to make such an adjustment. Thanks for the input!!!

Mike,
I will be in touch with you very soon on our other project.

It will be interesting to see this project develop.

What are the financial considerations? Will you require a minimum number of orders? Will you build some spec. rifles to offer the public? Is this envisioned a commercial enterprise or a hobby?

And the most interesting question - Do you have a target price point?
