Dugaboy I could not have said it better myself. I have no experiences with Merkels, but I seriously doubt that they are as bad as earlier posted. I know there are many who prefer the old "ossie" merkels before the Wall came down, but Merkels are used in large numbers in Europe as "everyday" rifles for boar, stag etc, if they were really that unreliable they wouldn't last on the market, otherwise how would the complete with comperable products like: Kreighoff, Heym, Lauronna, Demas, Beretta, Browning, Chapuis, etc.??

My double is a Searcy in 470 NE that I paid only $6500 for about 3 years ago through a special offer at another site. It took almost exactly one year to complete, but has great wood and is left-handed. Although it is my heftiest gun, it comes up to point well for me. I have not hunted with it. It is the only rifle I own that has probably gone up in value after my purchasing it! I thought I read somewhere that Searcy is no longer making field grade rifles, but I have not checked their site.

510,
Actually Butchs guns have Turkish walnut and he purchases that wood from Bill Dowtin I believe....I suppose he does use some English also...Mine is definatly Turkish.

Mac,
The Merkels that I have seen shot off face have all been in 375 H&H and 416 Rigby as one would expect they would..Apparantly the stupid bean counters thought the actions were capable of 60,000 PSI I guess...but I wonder if they are truly that ignorant and apparantly they are then why would I want anything they produce. The other thing is I have seen the inside of the actions and that surely was not impressive....Just my call.

Ray, even though the Merkel ain't the purtiest double out there, it does shoot fairly accurately. If some dude hadn't had more money than sense I'd still have mine right now. He NEEDED and WANTED a double in the worst way and paid me retail plus gunsmithing charges for all the tweaks that I had done on it. Granted, the engraving ain't as purty as your doubles, but the wood on mine was excellent with good grain showing through both sides on butt and forearm.

I have a Searcy [Re: gryphon]
      #9177 - 16/02/04 05:53 PM

I have a Searcy in 500 nitro express. It handles nicely, has excellent wood, and remains very tight after 200 or so rounds. It is properly regulated and much more accurate than I can see. This fall it will be harvesting two elephants and a buffalo.

Ray

I'll explain my earlier comment.

I was pointing out things aint always as they seem, vested interests and all. Some people are just ehthusiasts. Some people have a commercial interest.

My view[/ii] is based on the following;
1) my personal experience with doubles is not great. Give me twenty years and we will see.
2) I feel the best value doubles in Oz are English doubles. There are some excellent gunsmiths here that can look them over and give a report of whether there is any problems. Keep them all from heading North-East. However they are still expensive.
3) Searcy - never handled one, they look OK from the photos, BUT if you imported one to Aust after buying it retail, freight, insurance, fees and taxes, you should be able to easily buy an English double, which will keep its value.
4) Merkels. I considered buying one and at A$7000 to A$9000 for near new ones hardly used they are by far the cheapest nitro doubles.
As for looks I have a shottie that is similar and I am a barbarian with my firearms, using them hard so really shouldn't have something too fancy as it would be a waste.
5) Krieghoff. Would think about one but the Krieghoff new was near in price to my Jeffrey and would depreciate immediately after the sale.
6) Chapuis. Don't really like their looks, but that just my opinion.
7) Heym. No idea, never seen one.

I would assume we could easily find people that love one of them and hate the others, for each of them.

I would buy one of these EAA doubles for US$600 in a medium calibre. Why not! If it shoots it does. If it doesn't you haven't blown a house deposit on it. Bit ugly though. I am looking at buying a (edited for a comp) 9.3mm asa medium double for hard use. If it is light enough it would be my sambar mountain rifle.

In reply to:

Since H&H and Kreighoff send this smith guns for re-regulating

In reply to:

As for H&H and Kreighoff sending him guns for work, it is absolutely the truth. Ive helped him unpack the shipped guns...right from H&H and from Kreighoff.

luv2safari

Not questioning you, looking for verification.

Are you saying H&H and Krieghioff are sending Lee Lebas new doubles to be regulated ?! Or are doubles that need to be re-regulated because of problems or new loads?

Thanks.

Let's not turn this into another hot AR Forum discussion, please! I came here for a little peace and quiet to get away from the incessant discussions(?) on 45-70's etc. CAN'T WE JUST GET ALONG?

Mac

If Lee Labass is good at regulating and doing repairs it may just be a case of it bing easier for Holland and Krieghoff to send the guns to a 'smith' inside the Country than pack them up, with additional paperwork, to Europe.

Lee Labas is one of the best double rifle men in the USA in my opinnion, of that I have little doubt...another is David Yale in Yellow Jacket Colorado, they both can make a double shoot whatever it is capable of....

If one wants to know what his double is capable of shooting in terms of inches, then shoot several groups with each individual barrel, the gun will shoot as well as the WORST barrel will group...then it can be regulated to that point, and brought to the POI at whatever range one desires, usually 50 yards.......
