Some might say "but its got a scope on it"

I don't think everyone is always happy..Abe was right.

Me? I want a scope on mine!

But if it is a 30 Super, then it needs a scope !

Not "a scope" but that scope and especially those mounts.

Ugly square mounts on such a beautiful rifle, and the scope is out of proportion.

Yes I too would scope it, but with a smaller scope and far nicer mounts. It isn't a cheap rifle after all so deserves better.

Oh, I see what you mean.

It would be interested to know if they were done
after it was made and what year.

They are very strong mounts though.

Agree, ugly mount and wrong scope. But as Gryphon said, I would also want a scope.

Well, I'm not in agreement.

I think that scope is not out of place. It is proportional to the rifle. If it had a great big 50mm objective, then it would be disproportional and ugly.

The mounts are Holland & Holland's own mounting system and entirely appropriate. What would you prefer, a Recnkagel pivot mount? That would be an abomination.

So I don't get it. If you like a H&H rifle and you want a scope, this is the proper mount.

Perhaps you would like it better if the scope had a straight tube?

Same mounting system here, different scope.

That beautiful rifle is a .375 Flanged Magnum and now belongs to another happy shooter/collector.

I respect a man's right to like what he likes.

However, it comes down to the fact you simply don't like the way H&H mounts a scope. In my opinion, anything else is not proper on an H&H rifle. I have seen them with claw mounts, Recknagel mounts, etc. Those are the ones that hurt my eyes because they are incorrect on a Holland rifle. I would have nothing other than Holland's own mount on an H&H rifle.

Perhaps you would order your H&H with a schnabel forend and a Bavarian cheekpiece?

I personally did not see a problem with it. With sort guns, 'm finding I need scopes too.

Just yesterday, I was thinking I'd like to do some shooting with a Ruger Deerfield - I think that's the model- their first semi-auto .44 mag. I tried a few sightings and could not see the front sight at all and the rear was so fuzzy I couldn't tell where the notch was. My eyesight seems to be deteriorating rapidly.

That scope is just fine - for me.

I've noticed a change in my eye sight but went for a test and they said it hasn't changed that much from my last prescription !

But it will be interesting to see how it affects shooting a DR or other open sighted guns down the track.

IMHO the classic 4x Zeiss "Diatal" with a 26 mm tube on the top rifle is much less disgusting than the modernistic Kahles variable with it's 30 mm tube and clumsy magnification ring on the lower one. And I have long accepted the fact that the Brits never succeeded to make a nice looking scope mount. All their mounts look somewhat squarish like designed by an engineer of heavy machinery.

Obviously the angle of the photo makes a big difference to the appearance of the mounts.

From other than a profile angle, they are chunky and squarish, and really don't match the rest of H&H usual style. JMO.

It's not just the size of the scope, it's the lack of sufficient eye relief which puts this kind of scope/mount at odds with the design of the rifle. A 22mm Noske, with its formidable eye relief, would be ideal.

No not at all. I would rather the scope and mounts weren't there at all, especially on such a high quality double. To me it looks out of place but as you said each to there own

A scope on a sxs is something like a sidecar on a motorcycle; ugly as hell. If you must use a scope, you must put it on an over/under double rifle, for that configuration, though it isn't beautiful, it has a lot more beauty than scope on sxs. Those are my opinions, of course; that is precisely what I have done over the past 40+ years--works for me!

xausa you have hit the nail on the head. I couldn't figure what I didn't like about the scope set up. To me a scope on a double, esp a SXS needs to be long eye relief and mounted so the scope does not protrude reward past the break in the action line.

I also believe the 4x scope is the "ideal" stalking scope and ideal for the break action rifle. In fact I and some friends have specially ordered five of the steel tubed Schmidt & Bender 4x36 1A scopes for such use.

I think it is fine. If it's a high velocity round then by all means. Makes the rifle more useful.
