Best bang for the buck
      #99737 - 20/03/08 10:23 AM

Yes, I know "double rifle" and "cheap" dont go or belong in the same sentence. I have always been intrigued by doubles and was wondering what makers would provide me with the best bang for the buck. I dont want something thats going to fall apart or group like a shotgun, but I can't spend a fortune. I would be interested in some sort of a medium bore like 9.3 or 375. I thank you for your input in advance.

Simon

A Merkel 140 in 9.3x74R with ejectors, costs about $6000 Australian. They have a good reputation re accuracy, regulation, build. To get one in 470NE requires going to the African model, with will cost about A$11,000. Terry Wieland rates them well. I've got a 9.3 on order, should arrive, hopefully, late this year or early next year. You may be lucky enough to find one in stock, but I doubt it.

The decreasing value of the dollar against the euro make any price statements here questionable, at best. I've got a Chapuis enroute with recoil pad added and triggers lightened (both done in the USA) with 1" pivot rings in 7X65R for ~ $4600 USD. I know prices have gone up to account for the decline of the dollar. Check with Kebco or Dave Nygaard for their current prices. Both are on the AR Double Rifle forum, maybe here as well. I know Kebco had a couple of Chapuis 9.3's in stock for around $4400 or so a few weeks back. The Chapuis very likely will group less than 2" at 100 yards for both barrels. I suspect that you can get into a Chapuis 9.3 for ~$5000 at the top (w/o rings and bases). Pilgrim

Hey Slimbo- You've got a great resource in your own hometown. Go visit Martini and Hagn. They often list used doubles. I'm sure they'd give an opinion regarding reliable brands. I corresponded with Mandy regarding a Heym they had for sale. Real friendly team.

In new DRs, for a SXS I'd go with a Chapuis or a Merkel. I have owned both and prefer the Merkel to the Chapuis but that is simply a personal preference as both are excellent 'bang for the buck.' In a 9.3X74R, the lightest and perhaps best for carrying all day would be the Merkel 141 series which is built on a 28 ga chassis and weighs a bit less than the 140 series. The trade off would be a tad more recoil, but I have used the 141 in the 9.3 and find the recoil perfectly acceptable. Dave

Slimbo

If you are looking for a 9.3 or smaller you are very lucky to be in Canada. There are a large variety of reasonable priced medium and small bores available from European makers most people in the US have never heard of.

You can buy a couple of different Italian SxS in 9.3, 7.65R and the like for less than $3000Can. Eastern Block rifles, that are quite good, sell in the same neighborhood.

The Heyms are pricey, and beyond 10 grand at least.

Mickey- I'd be interested in your ideas on the SXS sales in Canada. I have a Heym 26B o/u in 9.3, but would like a 9.3 or bigger in a SXS ( possible 375, 416 would be fine). I've not found a lot of action in the double around here. Are you in BC too?

Cheers Jim

Mickey,
Can you elaborate on the models (both Italian and Eastern Block) that sell for ~$3000.00CA?
I am in the US, but I haven't seen much in the way of DRs from these countries.
Thanks
George

The Heyms are in the $15,000 US range---for a base double, they are very well made--IMHO..

Here at Wolverine Supplies, Manitoba, Canada, we have new Merkel 140AE rifles in .470 NE in stock ready for immediate delivery. Theses feature 23.5 inch barrels, approx 10 lb, brass bead front sight, 3 leaf express sights, pivoting front trigger and ejectors. They are listing for $10,050.00. Pictures of these exact rifles are on our web page.

We have the smaller Merkel 141AE in 8 x 57JRS and Merkel 140AE in 9.3 x 74R on order, again with Recknagel claw mounts. If interested in one of these we can arrange to have the scope mounted and regulated by Merkel. I would recommend the Swarovski 1-6 or the Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4

I am using a Merkel 140 AE in 9.3 x 74R, I am very pleased with her and will be hunting plains game in SA with her in three weeks. She is fitted with Swarovski 1-6 in Recknagel claw mounts. As we have a range here interested customers can test fire her, as well as the .470 NE.

As well as Merkels we can also supply DR from other manufactures delivery times will run from 6 to 12 months, please contact me to discuss models, calibers, options and prices. Payment plans and trades can be arranged. Please e-mail me direct at: John@wolverinesupplies.com

Sako or Tarawa

I'm not sure where you guys are at but there is a Gun shop in North Van that sells European rifles. The fellow can also order what you want. I can't remember the name of the shop but a friend of mine bought a 9.3 Sabbati for $2700Can about two years ago from him. He said the guy a bit peculiar but easy to deal with.

I will try and get a name and maybe a phone today.

Italian Sporting Goods also can get Euro Doubles if you know what you want at reasonable prices.

These are medium and small bores now, not the bigger stuff.

I think you're speaking of Giovanni at European Arms Distributors.?
He seemed quite friendly, but I haven't darkened the doorway yet.

John, how much are the 9.3's coming for? I read that the 141 regulates with the 232 gr load. Dose the 140 regulate with the heavier 286/292 gr?

How about that 470 for relaoding components. I hear the commercial stuff is pricey per load.($20 or so)
Do you get many of the merkels in 375 or 416 rigby?.
I'd like a bigger double, but I'm not likely to need a 470. Even a down-loaded 458 would be nice, but I hear the pressures are high, and rimless is not as good for double extractions.

Maybe I should just search for a stout 9.3 load. I want it for moose, bear, etc

The Merkel 9.3 lists for $6,127.00. I can have these rifles regulated with any standard load. My 140 is regulated with the Norma 286 Alaska rd as I plan to use her mainly in Africa, I also reload with the 286 gr Woodleigh bullet. I am not convinced that the lighter 141 is a good candidate for the 9.3 rd. My personal view is that the adj regulation on the 141 muzzle is an unnecessary complication, but some customers like this feature, I also feel that the 141 is two light a rifle for the 9.3 rd.

We stock reloading components for the .470NE. Federal ammo is $244.00 per 20. I am still waiting for price conformation for the Norma ammo.

There are plenty of good DR in use that are chambered for higher pressure rimless rds like the .375 and .416, they do work, but my personal belief is that a DR should be chambered for a low pressure rimmed rd. Merkels in rimless rds I will bring in to order only.

I believe the 9.3 x 74R is a superb cartridge, an excellent choice for large North American game and she can still hold her own in Africa in all but the most dangerous encounters.

I hope the above info helps.
