      #72679 - 28/02/07 04:45 AM

hello all. I am a newcomer to this forum. I am just about to place an order for a new double rifle with hollands. I posted the question I am about to ask first on the www.doublegunshop.com forum. I received a number of very helpful replies and a gentleman emailed me to suggest I post the question here as there was a lot of double rifle knowledge on this forum. I will put the link here. If you have the time could you spare a moment, look at the spec, look at the replies and add any information you may feel is of help. Much obliged in advance, Mike Bailey

Mike .... welcome to a great forum and congrats on the new rifle!

From what I read in your linked post, it sure would seem that you thought this over in a thorough manner.

The rifle as spec'd to Holland reads like a Christmas wish list to most.

One of the things that I would change (and its primarily a matter of taste) is the beavertail forearm. In my opinion, they look rather heavy and if you dont have a big enough mitt they can be rather clumsy.

Do I understand that the delivery on this rifle is two years from time of order?

If I may, is the price fixed or adjusted (if deemed necessary by Holland)at time of delivery? in the event that I am prying, just say so and I apolgise in advance.

I am sure that you will get plenty of intelligent feedback on this post.
Again ... Welcome to Nitro Express.com!

All:

Here is Mike's Original Posat on the other site:

good morning all, I am new to this forum and would like to ask aquestion which may help me in the near future. I plan on ordering a new H&H double Royal in late March/early April. I have supplied all the requirements I CAN THINK OF to Patrick at Holland, which I have listed below. As a forum can any of you out there think of anything I have missed which is a necessary spec ? Below is current specs

Royal Double Rifle in .375 RIMMED H&H

hand detachable locks

24" barrels

exhibition walnut BUT only as far as wood is still structuraly sound for purpose

iron sights, 50 yds and 100yds but also rear aperture that folds down into rib

Hollands proprietary scope mount

steel grip cap and skeleton butt plate, case hardened as per locks . also inner piece of lock case hardened (forgot the name, think it's bridle), the rest gold plated)

beavertail foregrip, stock to my measurements

sling swivels

fine rose and scroll engraved around edge of locks, for about 1 cm, leaving a plain piece of case hardened steel in the middle, H&H name in banner or other style to be decided, side clips

regulated for above cartridge loaded with Woodleigh 300 grain solids to shoot together, 1" high at 100 yds

checkering around entire hand grip and foreend at 24 LPI, palm swell in pistol grip

motor case to be made in hippo hide by Roland Lane

scope to be decided

anything I have missed, thanks in advance, Mike Bailey

I would avoid the beavertail forend and the palm swell. Keep it classic.

And I think I would go for a traditional Royal style engraving.

Ejectors? Y/N
I would certainly get ejectors, although there is fierce debate on that issue in some circles.

Sounds like a wonderful project. Good luck.

I have already decided to go with the splinter fore-end as Holland want me to stump up $4000 extra for the semi beaver which is silly. Ref optics, over here in Spain most gunshops have a wide variety to check out and compare and for the life of me I cannot see the difference between a Leupold VXIII and a Schmidt and Bender or a Schwarovski (forgive spelling ) Whatever scope I do get will be a 1.5-4 x 20/24 QD. Many thanks for the input, rgds, Mike Bailey

I have a Schmidt & Bender 1.25-4 30mm on my .375 Flanged. It is a good choice, IMHO.

I have a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 on my 9.3x74R.

Given the choice, take the S&B, though the Leupold is fine.

Personally I would try to pick up a used H&H, still extremely expensive but much cheaper then new. $50,000-$60,000 buys a heck of a nice rifle and you won't lose a penny on it due to depreciation.

Either way I would kill to have either but will never have the pleasure of owning one. You are a fortunate man!

Sounds like a fun project.

Here are my thoughts:

I would specify the weight not to exceed 9lbs and not to be less than 8 1/2lbs, without the scope.

Splinter forend!

No palmn swell!

26" barrels!

Back action and not bar action!

I believe that H&H's scope mount is for bolt rifles only. If so then go for claw mounts.

Royal engraving.

50yds standing sight to shoot to the POA. If you want the 100yd standing sight and the folding peep to shoot 1" high at 100yds thats great.

You need to specify front bead diameter. Specify a spare - in a trap grip cap!! The skeleton grip cap is not traditional or functional, the trap grip cap is both and probably cheaper too.

Leather covered hard pad!! An "option" worth its weight in gold!!

Specify the sling mounts and also the sling swivels too. Hooks are ok but make sure you know what you're getting.

GET EJECTORS!!!

Specify lever forend release and not an Anson release.

Specify bolstered frame and third fastener.

Specify the regulation load and have it engraved on the rifle.

Specify a long top strap and an extended trigger tang.

I would specify a bolted safety.

Specify intercepting sears, the Royal should have them but why leave it to chance.

Specify trigger pulls. 3 1/2-4lbs right,4lbs-41/2lbs left.

Specify a beaded trigger gaurd.

Specify a platinum center line in the standing blades.

Specify double triggers - shouldn't be nessecary, but...

Try your best to specify grip radius. Open is good.

Gold oval in stock or name/initials engraved on rifle.

Specify stock measurements - you said this but it is so important I needed to say it agian!!

Get the Shcmidt& Bender or at least a Swarovski. When you need to notice a difference it will be too late and there is a HUGE difference at dawn and twilight.

Great luck!

JPK

As stated above get 26 inch barrels. Don't go and buy a custom made double rifle with 24" barrels when you can have 26" barrels.
I would not buy a 375 Flanged double. Brass is too hard to find. 9.3X74R is a better choice in my opine.
Or you could just go ahead and get a 450/400 3 inch.
Hornady is making brass bullets and ammo for both.

I have had no trouble finding brass for the .375 Flanged. Bell brass is still available, and Jamison brass is on the way. Hoeneber also is in the game.

I agree heartily on the 26" barrels. I also agree that the grip cap should be the traditional trap-door and not a skeleton.

Sorry, have thought about it and am going to go with the normal pistol grip cap with spare foresight as suggested. Most of the rest mentioned by JPK is apparently standard. The bolted safety I am not going to go with since I don't plan on using a gunbearer. I have used 22", 24" and 26" barrels and prefer the 24". They haven't used lever foreends for 101 years, why should I ask for it ? Sorry for so many questions and thanks for all the great input, rgds Mike Bailey

As it was true that Leica did not make their own rifle scopes in the past, I was told by a Leica rep that they will be making their own scopes in the near future.

I have always been a big Leupold fan, but on comparison, I would opt for Zeiss or Kahles (in the case that Leica was not available yet).

Just a couple of thoughts.

Don't go with the metal butt. I have one on a 9.3x74R and you can not sit the rifle on anything without scratching it or worrying about it slipping. I usually put a lace on recoil pad just to protect it.

Balance is more important than barrel length. I am not sure a Holland will balance correctly with 24" tubes in the 375Fl.

I like the lever forend release. It seems much more likely to work all the time. No stickyness. I have had three Royals and all had lever releases.

I love the choice of the 375Fl. A grand cartridge and plenty of poop for what you want. Much more practical than the 40+ calibers and a better all around cartridge than the 9.3. Plus it is a Holland after all.
