460 Weatherby Vs 577 Nitro recoil
      #48409 - 29/01/06 11:25 AM

I was at my gun shop today picking up some cleaning supplies. A "gentleman" was telling me that a double rifle (he shoots a 470 Nitro)has a different type of recoil than a bolt rifle does and is more punishing. Does anybody have experience shooting a 460 weatherby(factory loads 500 grain) and 577 Nitro? The reason I'm asking is because I'm talking to Butch Searcy about having my 577 weight 11 pounds vs 13 pounds. I shoot 20 rounds factory loads per range practice session. Thank you for your help!..steve

I guess you could say that. The recoil of a double IS definitely different from that of a bolt rifle. Bolt rifles are usually significantly more punishing.

The NE cartridges are more of a push while the weatherby rounds are more of a jab, for me at least(although I have never shot a 460). I find the NE rounds much more pleasant. From what I have heard(I have never shot either round) I would rather shoot a 577 over a 460 weatherby.

I have tested the factory 500 grain load and a stout 600 grain handload. One test round of each was more than enough Rifle weighed 10,5 pounds or so

404 Jeffery, 416 Rigby or 450 NE is more to my likening.

Cheers,
/Johan

I have a 10.5 pound 577, although it is currently for sale, and I would recommend you get a 13 pound 577. That is the tried and true weight for recoil.

My rifle is a punishment of the first order although a much easier rifle to carry. That is why I got it so light, figuring on carrying it many more miles than times shooting it. Once yu have the load worked up for the light rifle than put it away until it is time to hunt. You will build yourself a flinch if you don't and will not get used to the recoil as it is in excess of 105 ft/lbs.

A 460 WB is less recoil but much sharper. I'm not sure which is worse. Perhaps just being run over by a Buffalo would be easier.

AKA:
The Weatherby will lose nothing by being Magna-ported, and many are! Also they have no great handling qualities to be ruined by adding mercury recoil-reducers in the buttstock. Heck, you could even duct-tape a house-brick to the fore-end and not bother the aesthetics of a Weatherby!

A double .577 Nitro on the other hand has only gun-weight and stock-fit with which to manage recoil. Don't skimp on either!

If you are having a nitro .577 made, the proper weight is at least 13 lbs. The BPE .577's were 10.5. You will seriously abuse yourself with a light gun, develop a flinch, then not shoot well.

When I started out hunting for a living, and upgraded from a 373 H&H, I had a Brno 602 in 458 converted to a 460 Wby.

Set up the chrono, and the first 500gn factory round came out the business end at 2714 FPS.
As a journalist, whose name I cannot recall, once wrote in a gun magazine, this experience proved to be a "SIGNIFICANT EMOTIONAL EVENT". IT KICKED THE LIVING #!IT OUT OF ME.

The stock retired immediately, I felt a little disillusioned, and sold the the gun to a fellow operator, who probably broke all records by selling it within about 15 minutes of him owning it.
A few years later, in 1994, I met Butch Searcy for the 1st time in SA, and had the chance to shoot on of his 577's.

The best way to way to compare the two, is a "SEVERE BITCH SLAPPING" to a "MODERATE PUNCH" on the shoulder from a larger than average gentleman.

With this being said, one has to take into account that the 460 was not a quality custom built gun, and wieghed around 9 lbs.
