Regulating Distances

Is there a rule of thumb for the distance that most older English double rifles were regulated at? Just curious.

100 yards. Some at 50 yards.

It is my understanding that British double rifles were initially shot and the sights regulated at the distance to be marked on the standing leaf. They were then checked at the distances to be marked on the folding leaves, and the sights adjusted by filing if necessary.

Many early black-powder big-bore doubles will have the standing leaf sighted for 60 yds, since the trajectory of those big lead slugs was considered 'flat' out to that distance. My AH .577 Express (much 'flatter shooting' than the bore-guns!) has a standing leaf marked 80 yds, and folding leaves for 150 and 220 yds. ...and you can bet the sights were filed for accurate shooting at those distances!

Regulating is for the most part done at fifty yards for a stopping rifle and one hundred for a stalking rifle like a 9.3 X 74. or so I have been told. When I build a double rifle in the big calibers I usually regulate it for 50 yards and check it at 100.

It is the small calibers that are the biggest bores.

Beautiful engraving on the sights, Marrakai...it's really cool! My Cogswell & Harrison 450/400 2-3/8" BPE standing sight is marked 150. The leaves are marked 250 and 350. So, in that case, was it sighted in to regulate at 150 yds? What kind of group size could be expected at that distance? It also has a flip up adjustable ladder sight that has no markings on it.

My C. W. Andrews 450/400 3-1/4" NE standing sight is 100. The leaves are marked 200 and 300. Any idea what normal group sizes would be appropriate for those sights?
