450 # 2

I'm thinking of having a Heym 88B double .458 win mag rebored to .450 Nitro #2 3 1/4 inch. I see that the brass for the 450 is about $95.00 per 20 lot. That is expensive no matter how you slice it. By the time I buy bullets to stuff in the cases, primers, powder, not to mention a new set of dies , I am speculating/calculating said rounds of ammunition will cost initially around $20.00 each. Over time this would become much less I suppose. And, the possible alternative, including the thought of 23 medical interns at Nairobi General squatting around a pail of jigsaw body parts playing the game "how to put Mikey together again"........ However, I also read that a .450 Nitro #2 3 1/4 needs a filler. This is a concern as I have never figured out how much filler is correct or just how to measure it. Does one just pull off a pinch and weigh it in the reloading scale? . Thanks and good shooting, Mike

Mike

the 450#2 is 3 1/2" long.

The 450 3 1/4" is the other 45.

Which one are you going to do?

I'm not sure if you should include the cost of the press in your figuring per shell. It cost me around $4/load. You can use the brass forever on the #2 and bullets are about $2/ea.

I don't know how much a .450 No2 Nitro Express cartridge costs, because no matter what I have one to feed.

The brass is horrendously expensive. If they can be re-used several times the price will decrease per shot. Only Bertram and Horneber make brass for the No.2 I believe.

It IS 3 1/2 inches long, not 3 1/4.

I use a grey foam filler, two or three cut pieces stuffed into the top of the powder so the base of the bullet is up against the foam. Originally it seemed to disintegrate but I have been finding perfect foam pieces on the ground more recently. One of them even was stuff to the hair of one of my buffalo if I remember rightly! It was close range shooting!

You will need a big press for the 3 1/2" No.2. It will not fit into the average press at all.

Nitro:
I use two pieces 1" long in my .500 BPE and usually find one piece pretty well chewed up and one good enough to load again. Am guessing the chewed up piece was the one next to the powder.
Prices on any of the 3 1/2" cases are much higher than the 3 1/4" brass, that last 1/4" must take a lot more steps and/or dies to produce. Dave

My mistake. Yes, 3 1/2 inch on the 450 #2. About the foam filler, would it possibly be the white colored stuff that is about 1/16th inch thick that is commonly used for packing? And can I take a used 45/70 case chamfered to a sharp edge to cut the "plugs"? Thanks again, Mike

Mike

i will photograph my "foam" so you know exactly what I am talking about.

Not styrofoam BTW.

I use a fairly non-scientific approach to cut mine, and maybe need to be a little more exact to improve accuracy. At least it is one variable that can be improved on.

4 Tails,

Were you thinking of getting the Ritterbusch advertised on Griffin & Howe? That looks like a very fine rifle and it has tempted me.

No, I didn't get the Ritterbush from Griffin & Howe. It was a nice looking rifle though. I just got off the phone with JJ at Champlins and have decided to go with rechambering to the 450 3 1/4 on this one. That is, IF, it passes muster. I believe I can also use my .458 Win Mag bullets I have in stock, excluding the solids, in the 450 3 1/4 if I am not mistaken. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. Now I need some loading data for the 400 grain and 500 grain bullets. Thanks, Mike

Check with Huntingtons, they have the brass, dies and every thing else right in stock. I do not have their # in here but if you can not find it let me know or call my at 207-938-3595 and I will give it to you.
