Reilly .500 3" BPE added to my collection
      #384639 - 02/05/24 08:47 PM

I was lucky yesterday and won this E. M. Reilly .500 3" BPE double rifle. It will be a nice addition to my small collection of BPE double rifles.

Beautiful rifle Casper!

My Reilly 450BPE is a wonderful shooter and is just a top quality rifle. I hope yours meets your expectations.

Congrats.

Chris

The date that I get from the serial number is 1877. So I'm wondering if the barrels are damascus but have been blacked to make them look like steel.

Mine is #21361 and the barrels are damascus. I was guessing 1883-4 based on serial and Henry PUN. Have you looked at Argo's thread on Reillys over on doublegun?

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....true#Post362421

To your question about damascus barrels possibly being blued to appear as steel, the first known Reilly with steel barrels is #19953. This is from Argo44 (Gene) writing a history without benefit of any remaining company ledgers.

Can't wait to see more pics when you receive it.

CJF
you'll have to compare loads to see how Casper's little addition goes - might like it too!
Well done Casper - it looks a marvellous piece of kit & case included, hopefully all kitted out too!

I got my info here: https://www.vintageguns.co.uk/magazine/dating-your-reilly-gun-or-rifle

The actual serial number is mentioned in the 1877 group.
20674 - E.M. Reilly & Co., (Address not mentioned). BPE SxS rifle, .500 (3”). U-L, Hammer gun.

Gavin has been asked to inspect the barrels to determine composition.

Mike, Thank you for sharing the article. I hadn't seen it. The author is the same gent whose post on Doublegunshop is now up to 96 pages (Argo44). You're looking at the best info there is. Address as you know is critical for dating a Reilly.

He's got mine in the 1878 group (I'm 21361 "E.M. Reilly & Co., Oxford Street, London & Rue Scribe, Paris. .450BPE. Rifle SxS. U-L, hammer gun. Henry patent A&T use #3524, #3525")

Chris and Mike,

That is interesting information.

I have an EM Reilly SS with Jones underlever in caliber 360 BPE with a serial number of 2548. I know that this rifle is not from 1844. Any thoughts as to when it was made?

Thanks for the link, It has dated my E M Reilly 10 bore DR S/No. 17230 (address Oxford Street) to
1871 which agrees with the style and early locks etc.

Casper - that is an extremely nice slightly later example, must be one of the later/last non-rebounding hammer rifles - excellent indeed!

More pics when you get it would be appreciated as usual
