" Great care should be therefore taken in making rifles for heavy game. There cannot be a better calibre than No 10; it is large enough for any animal in the world, and a double-barreled rifle of this bore, without a ramrod, is not the least cumbersome, even at the weight of fifteen pounds. A ramrod is not required to be in the gun for Ceylon shooting, as there is always a man behind with a spare rifle, who carries a loading rod, and were a ramrod fitted to a rifle of this size, it would render it very unhandy, and would also weaken the stock.

The sights should be of platinum at the muzzle, and blue steel, with a platinum strip with a broad and deep letter V cut in the breech-sights. In a gloomy forest it is frequently difficult to catch the muzzle sight, unless it is of some bright metal, such as silver or platinum; and a broad cut in the breech-sights, if shaped as described, allows a rapid aim, and may be taken fine or coarse at option."

I wonder how this compares to using a double today for DG in heavy bush.

No backup holding the matched double, but quicker reloading using brass cartridges?

Given the experience I had at the range this weekend with my A.Hollis, a back-up rifle is mandatory. First I got two cases stuck so tight that I had to pop them out with a cleaning rod, and the forearm latch fell apart (I found all the pieces, thankfully) – all on the first two shots. Had this been my only rifle on Safari I’d be livid.

Interesting point on the ramrod. I never thought of that...

Now all I need are two things: (1) a second DR muzzle loader; and (2) a bearer to carry it for those quick third and fourth shots

Thanks for posting Baker's writings, I've been thinking about looking for some more of his books in the future.

I actually really like the Indian hunting stories better than most of the African hunting ones.

I find the ramrod on the Kodiak 12 bore about useless for quick loading. The ball and patch combo that shoots well is very tight. I use a small rawhide hammer to start the balls, then a long aluminum ramrod with a T handle on it to ram home the ball and charge. In the field I'd use quickloads, and carry the ramrod on my back some how. When I shoot the heavy loads the rod falls out anyhow.

The stock rod is just to flimsy IMO, and needs a T handle so you can get a grip on it. If somebody could invent a folding ram rod with the tee handle that would work.

I agree with you on the Kodiak ramrod. I broke it the first day at the range... I replaced with a aluminium one and that seems to do the trick.

Have you ever considered a brass rod, made of brass tubing as sold in hobby shops? I have one I made from three such tubes that are made to nest together. They are epoxied in place, fitted with threaded inserts at both ends (for jag and handle), and thus weigh less than aluminum. Quite durable and they work for me anyway.

I've never thought of the brass rod idea. I might give that a try sounds like it'd both work and look classy.

Chasseur,
The truly classy answers are ebony or rosewood ramrods. I have an original rosewood ramrod on my Lang double and it is at least 175 yrs old and still good as the day it was made.

The brass idea uses very thin walled brass tubing that I buy in 3 ft sections at a hobby shop. I used three nested tubes but 2 would have sufficed. Solid brass would be way too heavy.
