My 577 build.
      #130180 - 21/03/09 11:25 PM

So, it starts.

This is going to be a double 577 with two extra set of barrels in 12/12 and 12/577. The top gun is a merkel 12 bore that will be gutted and the barrels will be used for the 12/577, and the wood and small parts are to be kept for furher projects. The buttom one is a simson that i will keep the barrels and use them as they are, it will also get a couple of 577 barrels on a shoe lump, regulated for the 650grs woodleight at about 1950fps.

The barrels are from lothar walter and are pull button rifled, it seems as they are a little tighter then the old ,577" at a 14,55mm bore so i had to take the pilot on my new jgs reamer down 0,1mm in diameter. The round bar is a cr/mo steel similar to the american 4140 that will be machined to a lump and braced on to the barrels.

I will run into a lot of problems on this one, so i will try to get it all in writing and photos.

Almost a year has past and between my family and our house, together with some other projects, this one had to wait. But i had time to gear up a bit for the build in the meantime.

I did get some time the last week and at least got something done.

To be able to give the barrels a nice contour i added a hydraulic copy device to my old lathe.

Here i start with taking the shotgun barrels profile and add a cylindrical peace over the chambers, some filing and stonig and it seems to be satisfying. It tapers rapidly in front of the chambers from 28,5mm, untill it reaches the end of the forend at 19mm diameter.

To be able to turn the barrel i had to get one of these.

Its a hydraulic steady rest that i searched for almost a year to find, and then it was in the US. Here around they are not hard to find, but if i did find one it costed as a car or it came with a cnc lathe attatched.

Last time i chambered a barrel it took ages, and i had to reverse the reamer every tenth of milimeter to get the f....g chips out. So i had to do something before i did it again.

I took a peace of aluminium and a couple of bearings and presurised the lathe with cooling fluid.
Together with a peace over the end of the barrel so it sealed up inside the lathe it worked quite well actually.

The next thing to do is to profile the barrels from the dummy i made. Then its the matter of the lump, first i intended to mill it, but that sounded quite boring so there must be an alterative.

Good luck Andreas,
seeing the skill and equipment required, you've convinced me not to try.

I would love to make a .577 db rifle, though. The 650-grainer at the 1650fps of the NfB load would be my pick - gentler on the shotgun action and the shooter, I imagine, if not quite up to elephants.

I finally got one of the barrels turned, but had to change the profile as it wouldnt work with the action. And as usuall something goes wrong, this time it was my live centre that broke and the vibrations from the bearings transplanded to the barrel giving it an ugly surface.
Now this wouldnt be a problem if it wasnt the last run and i didnt dare try another run so i would end up with a to thin barrel.
But some sanding and it turned out fine.

Now, i put the barrel on a scale and it stopped at 800grams, twice that is 1,6kg, some ribs, sights etc. and i think it will be around 1,9kg.

That would mean it will stop the scale somewere under 4kg, ouch.

Very interesting and am looking forward to seeing more of the project. And as A complete novice
on DR. I would love to see more members post their projects and ideas so maybe I and many more could gain some knowledge. Whitey

Paul - the .577 BPE was popular for Elephants by some hunters as noted in Greener's book by some hunter's writing in "The Field" I think it was. The heavy load was the 650 and 160 or 165gr. powder me thinks he remembers. The ability to use a hardened bullet raised this calibre from the smaller game fields, to include dangerous game.

Glad to hear that the barrel ended up ok.

If my math is right, 4 kilos would be equal to 8.8 pounds. Ouch is right! I'm glad it is going to be you shooting it instead of me. Good Luck with your build anyway. A very interesting thread.

First thanks to all the encouraging words, they are needed.

Now, the reason i broke the centre is that i was pushing it against an aluminium centre that i had put in the chuck. This enabled me to use the full lenght of the barrel as LW doesnt expect anyone to build a double with the 577 barrels an make them only 65cm long.

As you see i need some room for the steady rest, and next time i will turn everything down to a cylinder at the maximum diameter as the force of the steady rest pushes the bed away when pulled over a step leaving an uncut portion of the barrel some 3mm wide.

So i took the centre apart and its seems it had two standard bearings on it, no wonder it broke.

Here i changed the bottom bearing against an axial bearing instead and now it held up ok.

Now the barrels are turned and i need to construct a lump with two conic holes with a slight convergence to allow the barrels to cross at say 30m. Thats no fun on an old mill so i got one of these.

Its my new wire edm.

Hm, i wonder how it works?
