Just thought some of you blokes might enjoy this.

I just and I do mean just managed to rescue the gun from someone who was about to hand it into the cops for destruction because he didn't want to go to the trouble of licencing it!

When I got the gun, it hadn't been cleaned or the stock oiled for 30 odd years so my first job was to give it a fair bit of TLC. The first 3 or 4 coats of stock oil all sunk in in about 20 minutes each and it was slightly off the face but the guy who built my rifles put that right in a couple of minutes.

It's a John Dickson & Son sidelock ejector made in 1926 and came without the case which I bought from one of the local gun shops in a separate deal...... I wanted the oldest and most stuffed up motorcase I could find so that it complimented the age of the shotgun. - I then had to move all the partitions around to accommodate this particular gun and of course had to do it without damaging the old felt because new felt would ruin the look of the case..... but I was lucky enough to get away with that pretty well. The empty(ish) compartment at bottom left just takes a 'loaded' cartridge belt.

When I Googled the name of the original owner that was embossed on the lid, it turned out he was a botanist for the Natural History museum in the 1920s who travelled all over central and east Africa researching fungi for them. - Pretty cool huh!

I recently took the gun out for the first time and despite being stored for all those years with the springs compressed, it worked a treat and gave me right and left on guinea fowl..... I'd actually forgotten how much fun wingshooting can be!

I feel like a dog with two dicks about it.

So what do you reckon?

My only regret is that the cops only allow me to keep four firearms so it means I'll have to sell my 26 inch barreled 1934 Hollis BLNE which pisses me off a bit but I'd rather have the Dickson than the Hollis..... so if anyone knows a good home for it, my asking price is UKP500 or US750....

Here's the Hollis..... There's a possibility we might be moving up to Uganda and if the Hollis doesn't sell, I'll try get a permit for both shotguns so I can just keep both..... can't say I'll be disappointed!

You ain't kidding. The problem is that we don't have SA residency so different laws apply to residents.

If I were a resident, I could keep both but as I'm not, I'm buggered.

The residency thing is the main reason we're considering a move to Uganda.... mind you, it's helluva nice up there and attitudes are also very different indeed which is to my liking.

Can your wife keep it? I presume she can have 4 firearms to?

In theory she could but as she doesn't currently hold any firearms licences we'd have to apply from scratch and that would probably take a minimum of 2 years...... and probably longer.

They took over 10 months just to grant permission for me to swop the Hollis for the Dickson.
