425 WR rifle on their site
      #88986 - 15/11/07 02:14 AM

Gentlemen:

I posted this on the AR forum and would like some feedback from you gents as well. I am looking at the 425 WR rifle they have on their site (www.westleyrichards.com)under English bolt rifles. I spoke with the folks at WR and can inspect the rifle, but before I go to all that trouble, I'd like to have those interested look at the photos and opine as they feel. I've always thought I'd want a 425 and this SEEMS to be a reasonable deal. I've read posts that if it is indeed the "White Hunter" model to steer clear.

Please advise!

Thanks.

Gary

Re the 425, looks OK in the photos - it is one of the plainer models from what I can see.

I thought the White Hunter model referred to Double Rifles ?
and they are not that bad -people seems to have differing views on them, thosewho have them, love them, those who don't know sprout the above about them. They are not a Holland Royal but they aren't rubbish either.

Yes, there are no shortage of opinions....some informed, some not. I did a search and noticed that another gentleman posted about a VERY similar gun from earlier this year. Iwannadouble, I believe was his screen name. The rifle he was looking at....and maybe purchased, was the same type, but not the same gun...his had lighter wood.
I have had a real interest in the caliber for some time as I already own a 404 Jeff, 450 NE, 470 NE and a 375 H&H.
But hey, I get an inspection period, and if it's not what I want, I'll simply return it. But it does look like a nice "working" type of piece.
Thanks for the post.

Gary

Can I just clarify that there are 2 Separate topics in this thread.

1. In relation to "White Hunter" Westley Richards guns
- which I know as DR's.

2. The Bolt Action 425 WR as listed on the WR Web site ?

Garby

I agree - but the WR White Hunter gets a fair bit of bad press
which I think - and others also do - is unwarranted when looked at in the context of the Era they were built.

Those who have them seem to really like them and I certainly do.

I will post my view(s) once I have a chance to look her over and fire her with WR factory ammo that they are sending with the gun. She'll be on her way tomorrow, but should take about 5-6 days to get here. Just because a gun isn't embelished with fancy wood and other goodies doen't bother me...it all depends how she shoots.
Thanks.

Agreed.

I have seen a couple of 425's, that's the ony reason I made the comment.

The WR boys in Bozeman told me that indeed the White Hunter did include some 425 bolt models as well as DRs. He said they are plainer, but function very well....at least the ones they have had and presently have. As I posted, I'll take some photos and give a range report once she arrives.

Take care.

There should be a law that when posting a British rifle on the internet for sale that if you don't include a photo of the proof marks, the gun is free to the first caller. No 43049 should be 1955-57 or so, so yeah, it's from that early post-war period that the controversial guns came from. If the gun was proved in Brum (should have been), there will be a date code mark among the proof marks that will tell you the year that it was proved. London didn't start their date code until 1972. Let me know what the code is when you get it, and I'll give you the year.

Awfully plain gun for the price. Pay particularly close attention to how it functions when operated rapidly. The problem with the rebated rim of the .425 was poor quality guns, not the cartridge design.

Well, I received the gun this past Tuesday and took her out Wednesday for a test drive. Put 20 rounds thru her....not a hitch of any sort in the functioning. This gun is very accurate, but is shooting low. I'm going to have a higher rear sight installed. This rifle doesn't have the "clips" in the magazine, but it feed perfectly....and I put her thru the paces before I fired the first round. It is a 3 round mag with the 4th being able to be fed with the 3 down. At just a touch over 9#, she will get your attention with 410 gr at 2275 fps....my first pass with loads.

All in all, I'm happy with her.

Paul....I have looked extensively for that article and cannot find it. Do you happen to know where I can get my hands on a reprint? I would appreciate it. As soon as I received this rifle, I put 3 rounds in the magazine with a 4th on top and cycled it RAPIDLY. I did this 12-15 times before I even left the house to go to the range. I remember your earlier posts while I was searching for 425 info. The rifle functioned PERFECTLY. It shoots very nice, but about 8" low at 60 yds. I put 6 shots into 3.5" at 60 yds with all of the holes nearly touching.....but 8" low.
It IS a plain rifle but has all of the WR markings and is in very nice shape....I'm happy with her.

Thanks.

Gary

Agree Kevin is a good guy... I have the privelage of test firing some of their cosignment guns.. which is a great opportunity for myself to acquire experience shooting different types of doubles..

They typically have a pretty good selection available

Bill: Yes I'll post some pics I took before I sent her to JJ for a new rear sight a longer spacer/pad combo...she was a little short for my liking.

Ripp: Yes...Kevin is sending some scope mounts, brass, bullets, dies and a couple of other goodies. All in all, I'm very happy with the rifle. She shoots sweet and handles nice...albeit just about 3/4" short. She'll be headed to Zambia next year for my buff/leopard hunt.
I looked for quite a while before I found the 425 I wanted...I found her.
Thanks.

Gary

Paul....haven't got the book yet from the gentleman I bought it from, but from all indications, I believe you are correct. The boys from WR DID tell me, however, that they did make some bolts under the White Hunter label...like they did doubles. I haven't SEEN or heard anybody else say that, but I'm not in a position to argue with them. The gun does function perfectly though and does not have the clips spoken about often on the forums.
I should have the book in the next few days...he mailed it today from New York...and I will read it and advise you.
I will be posting some pics I took so you can have a look....of course they are on the WR site also...or they were earlier.

Thanks.

Gary
