What safety for Mauser in 505 Gibbs?

I am in the process of getting a new Magnum Mauser made up ,was thinking of 416Rigby but now will go with the .505 Gibbs. The question is what safety the M70 3 position or the original mauser style?. I will not be scoping this big thumper and I know the M70 is more popular but has any one used both and what is better? I am used to M70 but looking at keeping rifle with original style and resale. Thanks

I have several original 98s, military and Oberndorf Commercials, and after using both styles on original and custom built 98 actioned guns, I prefer the Model 70 style safety would recommend that beyond question. Most of the custom 98 actioned rifles have adopted the Winchester style safety even without the scope issue. IMHO, easier to use, faster(a whole lot faster) and more 'instinctive' to use. Dave (BTW, I have one of the new CZ Safaris in a 505 Gibbs, great gun, and the muzzle brake on it works wonders. Yeah, I know, load, lots of flash, but its my shoulder guys so call me a woosy.)

I have an original Magnum Mauser 505 and I see you are in Wang. If you want to throw mine up to your shoulder and see what it's like, your welcome.

I just very rarely use safeties when hunting DG and since the gun won't be scoped, I don't think it matters - I would go with what you are used to as the one danger when using guns whe hunting is having the safety on and when you need to take it off instinctively, it has to happen like that.

I gave up on the doubles so expensive! but slightly cheaper custom mauser magnum in 505 should be the ticket .What make is your 505? and is it for sale? Thanks

NO, and there is a queue at least 5 deep that I know of.
IF it was it would not be going for less than
the price of............trying to think of a suitable new car but I know what it's worth

Anyway, it has too much sentimental value to sell it.

Good to see you are getting into a Big Bore.

If considering an M70 style safety on a DG rifle, I would go for a 2 position and not a 3 position. It's either on or off. No inbetween.

And IMO, it should lock the bolt down when on safe, so that when you suddenly end up needing to push off the safety in a hurry, you don't get caught with the bolt handle having been pushed a bit up by some bush, which would prohibit you from taking off the safety.

I have this on my M98 Mag. in 375H&H, and am very pleased with this set up.

Or, if not scoped, and if you are used to using them, the old original M98 flag safety.

The most important IMO is that you practice with it so much that you don't need to think about it when operating the safety.

I would have to agree with ErikD--

I like my Mdl 70 safeties but have had the bolt open in brush when in the middle position--not cool!

I have an interesting after market safety on a modified Mdl 98 custom Mannlicher.It has only two options and the full motion up and down is about 60 degrees.
The safety is on the LEFT side of the action activated by your thumb with the up postion as safe and the down as ready, safety off.

Kinda like a 1911 with the thumb safety.I think I like it!!

I would say go with what you are used to, as the saying goes "Jack of all trades master of none" - not a good time to make any descisions (when a shot is most needed), the use of this valuable tool (the safety) should be instinctive IMHO. --- John303.
