Had some questions, if anyone can help ...

I've "heard" that some CZ .404s have hit dealer shelves already, but haven't seen any in my area.

1) What are these going for (dealer price vs. full retail, if you know)?

2) For those who've actually seen, handled, or bought one, how's the workmanship? Any reliability issues?

3) I have a .375 BRNO 602 in a McMillen synthetic "CZ Express" stock, which I like. Would the stock dimensions of the CZ .404 be the same as the CZ/BRNO .375? What I'm wondering is whether this particular synthetic stock would fit a CZ .404. Or does it require a larger receiver area, or maybe a wider barrel channel to accomodate the .404 barrel's O.D. measurements? (I was thinking of getting a CZ .404 and having it bedded into that stock for a possible Alaskan hunt later this year).

Thanks in advance for any info!

Hi Nick,
I think the dimensions should be the same cause CZ only got their std series and then the magnum series wich are all identical.Sound like a gun fuul of fun.I'll keep my eyes open here to see when I can get one.

At 2005 Reno SCI show CZ had a nice display including 458Lott, 404 and 505 Gibbs. Their latest catalog has all prices. These 3 are more expensive as I think they trick em up in USA.
Here in OZ we still only get 375,416Rig and 458WM.
Cheers Graham

Thanks for the replies.

After a little more digging, I found that CZ jazzed up their "plain jane" Safari 550 for these calibers only:

* .404 Jeff

* .450 Rigby

* .505 Gibbs.

You can see a picture of the rifle on CZ-USA's website. It's called the "Safari Classic" 550 and, while it's based on the same 550 action, it comes in a fancy grade American dark walnut stock (no "hog back" pitch to it), has a barrel band sling mount (no foreend nut to bang your off-hand), a 25" barrel and express sights. (The recoil pad looks to be a Pachmyr decelerator, but CZ didn't specify).

CZ further says the .404 SC 550 weighs in at 9.97lbs, has a 4-round mag capacity and a 13.75" LOP.

In a thread on AR about the CZ 404s, a poster stated that the SC 550s are running about $1700. He also stated that CZ is using custom .404 McGowen barrels with a 1-in-10 twist, which might account for the higher price, 'cause the barrel band mount alone sure wouldn't.

I haven't seen any other corroborating sources for this last info, so I'm just passing it on F.Y.I., with the usual caveats about the validity of internet sources, etc., but the other info above is from CZ's site.

Stay tuned.
