.41 Swiss, some who use it?
      #253649 - 18/09/14 03:44 AM

Hello.

The old Swiss military caliber, .41 Swiss or 10.4x38 witch it`s it metric name.
Anyone who use it for hunting? Target shooting?

Have come over a original rifle in the caliber, and brass to, new made with centerfire. Yes, the rifle has been converted.

All help is welcome.

Have a good evening.

Those old guns used to be found in barrels in antique stores and flea markets for less than a case of beer when I was a kid. No ammo was to be found.

I'll be interested if any Schweizer is doing anything with these old tomato stakes. You never know!

It would be a cool old relic to get up and running.

was used as a hunting cartridge in switzerland once

http://www.gian-marchet.ch/Patrone-Vetterli-d.htm

it seems they use 300 grains bullets for 44. mag today, dont see if in the original .429 diameter
original ballistik is around 425 m/sec what makes it a roe deer cartridge only

Thank you for the reply and information.
A 300 gr bullet at 420-430 m/sec will be a good short range roe deer caliber.

It is a interesting caliber/rifle.
How was these old Vetterli rifles? Good for its time?

I shoot targets with a Vetterli that I converted to centerfire.
It has a .429 bore that is in perfect shape.
For bullets i cast them from a Lee mould meant for the 44 magnum. It weighs 310 grains.
I make my brass from 8mm Lebel brass.
Lee makes dies for the 41 Swiss.
It's a fun round to shoot, low recoil, accurate enough to keep me interested ( 3" 5 shot groups @ 100 yards), rainbow trajectory and of course the funny looks you get from others are priceless.

Iowa_303
Hello.
Oh, a 3" 5 shoot group is very good.
Jepp, the look of the rifle is a bit, well not odd but not "modern"

Have you taken it out hunting?
Can I ask what fps you load it to?

No hunting so far with this rifle. I have thought about it but have not done it yet.
My loads are running between 1100-1200 fps (335-365 mps).
This is adequate for short range deer hunting with a properly placed bullet.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I guess it will be an ideal short range, woods rifle, with that load/caliber.
More or less like a 44 mag.

Try this site for conversion to centerfire, case forming and loading of cartridges.

it seems the hunting load for veterli rifles since 1904 was the 10,4x42R CF

42mm center fire against 38mm rimfire only because of the reduced capacity of a center fire case(solid base). I cant see that chambers were cut for the longer case so maybe it fits into original rifles.
if the barrel measure .430 - .431 you will be fine with 300 grains .429 softpoints for hunting.

Local chap here has one - converted it to CF long time ago and only did this so he could shoot it as it was a rimfire rifle.
I do think he used some .429" .44 mag bullets I gave him- probably 275gr. SWC as that is all I shot back then - thinking back about 35 years - seems to me he shot a black bear with that rifle - maybe a young bull moose too.
