585 barrels--Availability in AUS--
      #223296 - 10/01/13 03:51 PM

How many barrel makers are there in AUS doing
585 barrels and what prices. The barrel company I'm
working with here in US says for shipping overseas,
anything over 50cal that there must be a seperate
export licence for each privare buyer,. And I'm
wondering about guys having a supply there.ED

Who is that importer. Is he still in business.

Those are the most high priced target type barrels
in the world. but for big bore stopping rifle
maybe regular barrels should do.Ed

The demand can't be that high over here, especially now
Factory CZ's are available.

There are big bore fans over there and with Bruce being able
to make my 585HE anytime as needed in good quantities,
I'm thinking there should be enough interest to keep
one shop with enough orders, to import barrels all under
one licence application. Thus saving time and money
and making it convenient for shooters there and
a good barrel maker here. I hate red tape and bottlenecks.Ed.

Hubel

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying the demand
isn't likely to be that high.

Not a huge number of good gunsmiths over here who can actually make things anyway.

Also, 50 cal + is a specialist shooting area anyway
and what I was saying was of the interest out there,
some of the demand will have been taken up by CZ because they are cheaper than custom, they work and they are readily available.

The rifles he is advertising are ones he has imported for resale, not his own.

Was gunna say: who sells guns to go into retirement! That's the time to buy =D

Anyone know how much the .585's cost? Or I'll just email him if anyone's interested.
My local smith uses Pacnor, not sure where he sources them, but they also do .585.

Cheers,
Ash

Ash,
Drop me a PM regarding your 585 build. I can suggest where a 585 blank may be, plus alternate sources.
Cheers...

I think Kudu Services in Melbourne might have
a 585 barrel or two.

It was a while ago when he built one.

Gents, from my recent research.

Aus available 585 barrel makers

Tobler Barrels- NSW

I called Robert and he can still do 585 stainless.
He is also checking in a few weeks whether they can also do chrome moly 585's again. I got one off him about 13years ago, but he said they sold off their biggest drill sometime since then and have not offered them. Not sure what the difference is in making each type but a stainless is a definite at any rate, and if all goes well testing his smaller drill chrome moly may also be a go. I passed this onto Bob Devries at Kudu as well as I know he had a few 585 orders to fill. Anyone interested should maybe contact Robert themselves , any gunshop should have his details.

Sprinter Barrels- South Australia

Keith used to make everything up to 620 cal as we know and some real oddball sizes besides that, but had not accepted orders for these for quite some time that I am aware. I talked to him and he appears to still have the equipment to do one, and from talking to him he did not seem averse to doing them again. So its possible some more gents interested could convince him to do a couple more.

Lothar Walther- imports

Importer as above and some independant smiths do as well.I am no expert but weren;t their some dramas with the 585 barrel by this maker being a bit too tight? Not sure what the ramifications are. Also I know Bob devries and a couple other blokes have been waiting for their 585 barrel orders to be approved for import but frankly I would not hold my breath. Its the 50cal+ thing that is the problem...

Karl, thanks for the research and info.
A few weeks more and McGowen here will have
the tooling for 585.Ed
