Teflon or powder?
      #19319 - 19/09/04 08:51 PM

There seems some disagreement among gun shops as to whether it is best to Teflon coat or powder coat a rifle with a stainless barrel. I need to decide for a custom big bore rifle. Any veiws or experiences - or perhaps there's something better? Would prefer satin finish, not matte. Needs to look good.

Martin, After several poor experiances with the spray-n-bake Teflon,(chipping) I only use powder coating now..Besides, they come in a much wider variety of color's You can also bead blast the ss barrels and they will come out a matt finish med gray..

I have teflon-coating on the barrel of my rifle, and it's just like satin. At least, it was, when the gun was new. Now the barrel is full of marks and scrapes, so I have had to repaint the marks with a water resistant, black pen. My guess is that powder sticks better to steel.

Martin,

You may want to look into ceramic coating the metal. Check out fit4duty.com. They refered me to Charlie Sisk of Sisk Riffles and to H and D Rifles who have switchd from teflon to the fit4duty ceramic coating. Seems to be the next generation for weather proof coatings. Cost is reasonable at something like $200 +/-. Both Sisk and H and D liked the ceramic coating a whole lot better than teflon for looks and for wear resistance.

Good luck
JPK
