Kimber Caprivi in 458 Lott
      #182560 - 26/05/11 09:53 AM

Well I was waffling back and forth between double in 470NE, and a bolt rifle in .458 magnum. After going round and round and not finding the double that really stirred me, I came across the Kimber Caprivi in .458 Lott. Did some reading about the short comings of the .458 win mag with "compressed" loads, not shooting up to factory specs in shorter (22inch) barrels, etc etc. Now, I have shot the .458 Win mag and liked it and didn't experience any problems but I had not used it on ANY game, much less dangerous game. While I am still looking for the 470NE double, I decided the Kimber Caprivi offered all the features I desire in such a rifle, has nice looks and was offered in the .458 Lott that supposedly takes care of all the short comings the .458 seemed to have, albeit, in a longer action. Anyway, I purchased a new one today after looking at lots of pictures of the wood in the grip area and getting a much below retail price. I ordered the scope bases for the rifle just to have them in case I want to mount the Swarovski PH variable 1.4-4 I have in the gun cabinet. Rifle should be here in the next couple of weeks. here is the link to the Kimber caprivi: http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/specialty/caprivi

Any experience with this caliber in the game fields or range? Anything wrong with the Caprivi? I plan on using this for a water buff hunt in july and for future back up to the double. With the money I saved on this rifle over a double, and on the ammo, over NE ammo, I can pay for that plains game trip to RSA in August. All in all, I think I'm pleased with the choice (until I get schooled by the experience here!!!!) Pictures to follow once it arrives.

Hi Mike,

Congratulations on your purchase, I have never heard any bad reports on the Caprivi and should prove a fine weapon. Even Craig Boddington says nice things about the .458 Win and states that there were a bad batch of ammunition in the past but that has long since changed but as the story goes, the brown stuff sticks..

Who are you going to hunt with in August ?? I am going on the 10-21/8/2011 with Chris Troskie Safaris.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Congrats on the purchase! I do not have any experience with the Kimber Caprivi, but it looks to be a well built rifle.

I do have experience with the 458 Lott as far as range usage goes. It is a very versatile cartridge with loading 300 to 600gr projectiles and 1000 to 2500fps speeds.

Good Luck

I don't have a Kimber Caprivi in .458 Lott. I have a Kimber Talkeetna in .375 H&H.

I love it as much as any devoutly heterosexual man has a right to love a mechanical object.

Well, OK, that and the Cleveland Ford.

It's accurate and reliable. With the open sights I can keep it on a cigarrette box at 100 yards. I know this as I checked in Zimbabwe; I only shot out to 50 yards with the open sights at home but thanks to a screw I thought was firmly secured by loctite but wasn't it was open sights or nothing when I got to Zim.

I've heard that some find it difficult to reload as you must push fresh cartridges not only down but back. I've never found this to be an issue.

The Talkeetna's a fine rifle, too.

It gets shot a lot more than the .416.

Hate to say it, but money plays in.

I look forward to hearing more on your experience with this gun. I asked on another forum about the Kimber 458 Lott and hear some guns had problems. Many or most were stupid little things like the front bbl sling mount would pop off. And maybe the production guality varies over time making Kimber a crap shoot. Hard to say because on the web just one or two opinions can dominate a forum, but seemed more complaints than usual.

I really like the look and feel of the gun. Yhe negatives comments scared me off. And for me, this is a higher end of the price scale. Its somehting I would still reconsider. I could trade away my cz550 in Lott. Too bad about Winchester refusal to chamber the Lott and Ruger dropping the RSM.

Please keep us posted.

If you haven't gathered, I'm a tightewad.

Cobwegs on the sporran. last time I creaked it open. That sort of thing.

If someone like me thinks a Kimber is worth the money, you can take it to the bank.

On the other hand, I'll let you know when it stops working.

I'm vindictive that way.

Well, I must be the only one here who has taken an animal with the .458 Lott. So far, a 40 inch Cape Buffalo, a giraffe, a wart hog (w/a solid), and all I can say is I won't go back to anything else. My Ruger .416 will probably go up for sale. My .458 Lott is a Ruger #1 and I love it.

Mike,

LOL I'm spending the Holiday at my mom-in-law's home in Dover, had I read this thread before leaving home you'd have been welcome to shoot my Parker Hale .458 converted to the Lott.

The Kimber looks like a great rifle and I think you'll find the .458 cartridge the easiest and cheapest to feed of all the big bores.

I haven't shot any game with mine but a cartridge that will put three shots in a clover leaf at 50 yards and then poke a solid thru a railroad tie tends to instill a bit of confidence. I reload using RCBS .458 Winchester dies, works just like .38/.357 dies and if I remember it saved me some $ over buying "Lott" marked dies. You'll find that you can use Hornady's Basic Belted brass and save the head stamped stuff for foreign travel. I'm shooting a simple 500gr cast bullet from an el' cheapo Lee mould to the same POA/POI as the Hornady or Woodleigh soft/solid bullets. Using those components I can actually plink with full powered Lott loads cheaper than I can shoot my .308.

If you like to shoot I think you'll really like the Lott.

Rick R, thanks . I am going to be ordering supplies in for both loading th lott, and for my 12 bore sxs slug gun. Perhaps some round ball testing is due for it. My rifle should be here in a week or so, sent payment by snail mail. Coming out of Tenn. I ordered some factory ammo to get me started on brass to reload.
