Will the 404 Jeffery fit in a Winchester Model 70 ?

Seeing as how I already have a 9.3x62,no real need for a 375 H&H. So I'm thinking maybe a 404 Jeffery would be interesting. I know where I can pick up a post 64 Model 70 in 30-06 for a good price. Can I convert it to the 404 without much trouble?

I saw one done by a gunsmith acquaintance of mine. He is no longer in the area but I can PM you with his name and website. I believe he did his on a 30-06 model 70.

Yes quite easily and quite commonly. All model 70s are the same length so a 404 will fit on any caliber.

G'Day Fella's,

Woodbeef, FYI my .404 has a magazine length of 90mm
It is based in a Browning Safari CRF action.
Sorry, I didn't commission this rifles assembly, so I'm not able to tell you if the action was modified/lengthened to suit this cartridge.

this is a M70 in 404 on a test run prior to an Ele hunt.

Ozhunter that goat would not of moved to much after being hit by a 404J. Nice looking rifle.

I believe the 404Jeffery requires a 375H&H length action, so any action that can handle a 375 should be able to handle the 404.

Woodbeef, if you can get a Classic model in a RUM chambering it will be far easier and cheaper to build into a 404J

I wish Winchester would offer the 404 Jeff and 458Lott. As far as I am concerned they could be as replacement for the 416Rem and 458Win or in addition to. I have no interest in either of the current two offerings and I already have the M70 in 375HH. I also have Rigby by Ruger and Lott by CZ, but an M70 in 404 would be a sweet addition.

I am not very happy with my Lott by CZ either. I suppose I got what I payed for which is little consolation.

I dont get the rational behind Winchester chambering the magnum length 375 and 416 and only a standard length 458? Brand loyalty, I suppose. It has to be costing them some sales in the 458 class gun.

Folks are crying for 404's all over the internet. That is mostly looking for an affordable 404's like the working class gun it used to be. In a custom gun should be easy.

Good question. The previous iteration of the Winchester brand sold M70's in 458 Lott. Maybe their sales history indicates the 458 Win Mag is a better seller. Though you'd have to think the additional investment to bring the Lott to market would be very minimal.

I'm still waiting to see if they'll bring back Custom Shop offerings. At this point I doubt I'll own any more Custom Shop M70's, but I have to say the Custom African Express that used to live in my safe was one of the finest bolt guns I've ever seen. Not quite the quality of my Empires, but a damned fine rifle all the same, and far superior to the old pre-'64 African.

there is actually a pretty good article in FIELD AND STREAM by David Petzal on the new Winchester Safari's..link is below..David seems to be a no nonsense writer and speaks his mind freely..as least in the articles of reveiw I have read in the past...

I purchased one in .416 Remington..have several in that caliber and based on my expreience both in Africa and N America, see no reason for any other caliber..awesome in both penetration and knock down power..

Do agree however, having a .404 Jeffrey is intriguing..so might grab another and have it chambered in .404 Jeffrey...as they say, NEED has nothing to do with it...

Ripp that was an interesting read on the new Win 70 you posted the link to. Now I just may have to get one of those. If I do then the question arises. Keep it as a 375 or convert to 404?

Hi guys,

I have a Model 70 as a 404 and I love it, a few things to consider with this conversion are new magazine box and follower as the 375 one will make life difficult. i have struggled with mine for years and have finally gone bugger it and am buying a SMP unit that will hold 4 down in standard guise.

secondly a bit of metal will need to come off the feed rails normally and a new extractor claw may be useful too.

Mine is on the very cheap still using the bottom metal and 375 mag box but it does work. As above a RUM would be heaps better place to start.

OZ, great piece that one!

404 is the best compromise large medium IMO, light, easy to shoot and hits with real authority too.
