550 Magnum....could this be the best big banger?
      #9513 - 19/02/04 04:03 PM

I have just been introduced to this calibre by Ed Hubel and RNS, which for those who might not be familiar with it, is a 460 Wby taken out to a straight case which equates to 550 calibre. I think Geoff McDonald (Woodleigh) had something similar but he went up to about 54 calibre, so his case would have a slightly greater taper.

RNS who has got things organised amd moving has this whole thing set up so it is all straight forward and easy....and a low price.

My calculations show that if it was loaded to the same pressure as 460 doing 2500 f/s with 500 grainers then the 550 would do 2250 f/s with 750 grainers. If the 585 Nyati has decent brass it would go faster but most who have posted up details on their 585 Nyatis seem to indicate that 2200 f/s with 750s is the end of the road due to recoil.

550 calibre should also allow the use of 900 grains bullets and they shoud do 2050 with the pressure used in a 460 to do 2500 f/s with 500 grainers.

So in short, for practical purposes it can deliver the maximum power that you can use from a normal rifle and at the same time would allow bullets up to 800 or 900 grains to be used. Yet at the same time there are no brass problems such as soft cases or poorly dimensioned cases and obviously conversion of a CZ 416 Rigby or a Weatherby Mark V is as easy as can bee. In addition, being 550 it should and will be must better suited to lighter bullets at the 600 grain end of the spectrum.

I just need to check use of 50 cal plus at our rifle range, which I am 99% sure is OK with the only problem being the 50 BMG and then my cheque makes its trip across the ocean.

Mike

Mike--It is the best big bore for Weatherby folks.
Easy to convert to, simple easy brass supply, and gets
the absolute max that Weatherby brass wiil do.Hope
that in a year you blokes will have dozens of them
over there.I do all in my power to promote big bore
belted straight cartridges. Ed.

Ed,

Would it also be the best option for the CZ 416 Rigby.

That's the way Mike! Give up those weatherbees and get into the field of mausers like a good fellow.

500 grains,

I am far too troll like in my personality to go along with majority view on the Mauser typer rifles. One of the things that I have always found attractive about Weatherbys is that so many people range from disliking to hating them

But the facts are the 550 would be ideal for the CZ 416 Rigby owner that wants to step up in power.

The CZ would work fine, like other Mausers. And Weatherbys.
But for me the Wea stock don't work,I like a straight
stock.A case bases on 460 brass can be put in about anything, even a Savage. All I say is as long as your
rebarrelling any action , make sure the lugs are seated good,as that is the time to do it.This 550 Mag, like
the OK is a simple case to load for, build reamers for,
build dies for, and so on.I feel that wildcatting has
got to a place where case design has went screwball,
and to complicated...Straight and simple is great
to me....Ed.

Mike,
If the 550 delivers the goods it promises, which seems likely to me, I feel it will be the best compromise of frontal area, energy, sectional density, and magazine capacity. IF I decide to build another big gun, I think the 550 may well be it.

Here is a barrel package that we are putting together, Basically all you need to do is add an action and stock

Uncontoured rifled blank up to 1.75 $275.00
custom coutouring barrel with lug $135.00
Long chambering W/O threads $ 75.00
Long chambering With threads $175.00
Headspacing $200.00
Custom quarter rib $100.00
Banded front sight $ 65.00
Hood $ 16.00
Front sight insert $ 18.00
Rear sight one leaf $ 75.00
Rear sight two leaf $ 85.00
Rear sight three leaf $ 95.00

Cz 550 mag 3 pos safety $210.00
drop floor plate $??????
new triger $??????

I talked to Geoff about his 530 at the Shot show and he stated that he could get 2250 with no problem using 460 Weatherby brass which should have given him a case lenght of 2.885" compared to my case of 3.000"

Mike you have this thing figured out, an affordable big bore with an endless supply of brass good penetration and energy. Why build a 585 or larger when I can have 4 in the mag and one in the tube and with one pull of the triger unleash over 8,000 ft/lbs of energy.

Neal,

Just emailed you.

My bank draught gets posted tomorrow or Friday and includes the muzzle brake with holes or round it.

Gas checks would be good if you get that far down the track. A bullet mould for paper patching??? Although moulds are easy enough to get done out here.

Is anyone else looking to do it on a Wby or is all interest CZ 416 rebarrels?

It should reach 8500 ft/lbs with the same pressure as 460 doing 2500 f/s with 500 grainers.

I wonder if I will be the only person in the world whose only rifles are based on the 378 case???

Mike

Mike

That would make you the first one to do it on a Weatherby Most so far are going the Cz 550 route.

I have talked to a company about doing gas checks for the .550". It would cost $500.00 for the tooling and $20.00for a 1,000 of them.

I am going to need some pictures of the first Weatherby for the web page, have you seen it yet? I updated it again last night.

I think the energy this cartridge can develpoe will get most peoples attention.

RNS,

Saw the site, very good. What is the reference to Horneber brass.

In my limited cast bullet experience pressure rather than velocity seemed to be the main issue in terms of how high one couild load.

I calculate that the 550 should do 2500 f/s with 600 grainers at a tad less pressure than a 460 does 2500 with 500 grainers (which is already moderate pressure) so the 550 with 600 grainers at 2100 or so would be very mild pressure and as such should be ideal for gas check bullets.

Mike

Horneber brass is who is making the first run of 3.00" brass.

Thought you might like to see how the project is going.

It is starting to look like a gun.

RNS,

I am getting the dreaded red crosses. When I go to properties to get the link and paste in I get when I try and open:

RNS,

I can now get the first picture picture up.

What are those few holes or what appears like holes in the barrel. What looks like 3 holes, then a slot and then 2 holes.
