Left Handed rifles for Safari/Africa
      #5458 - 06/12/03 10:48 PM

I am Left Handed and was wondering how many people actually have Left Handed rifles or rifles that can be used by either hand for African Big Five use. My pet rifles are as follows-

.470 NE, William Douglass, Double, (either hand no cheekpiece)

.375 H&H, Winchester M70 Classic, Left Hand.

.405 Win., Winchester 1895, either hand ejects straight up.

My next rifle when I have the Dollars is a Dumoulin, .416 Rigby on a Left Hand Magnum Mauser action and maybe a Dakota in a .300 Magnum calibre (.300H&H?) again when I have the Dollars. Thanks
RLI

Ruger #1 in .375 H&H, Magnum Research left-hand bolt action in .375 H&H (Sako action), Winchester model 70 LH in .375 H&H, Winchester stainless model 70 LH now in .416 Taylor and a Searcy left-hand stocked for me in 470 NE. I have never used ANY of them on dangerous game. I'm frankly more likely to take one to Alaska for big bear before I get to Africa. But they are all fun to shoot at the range!

RLI,

I have used a LH Winchester Model 70 .375H&H on Cape buffalo and leopards, as well as a LH Winchester Model 70 .470 Capstick on Cape buffalo. A LH Model 70 in .458 Win. Mag. is in my future, and perhaps, nay probably, a LH Model 70 in .416 Remington Magnum.

I had a LH Sako FinnBear .375H&H but never used it on DG; I sold it off.

I use a left handed Weatherby action in .500 Jeffrey custom built by Sabi Rifles in Nelspruit RSA. ...... cycles a treat.

I know this would not be a DGR, but I know I saw a new Merkel 140-1 that was supposed to be a LEFT HAND 9.3 x 74R listed in a Cape Outfitter's flyer a few years back. Price was quite reasonable. I have never seen it mentioned since that Merkel makes a double rifle for lefties. Any info on this?
