Looking for a .45
      #48715 - 31/01/06 03:16 PM

I am somewhat interested in buying a .45 caliber rifle. I've got one, and it is perfectly adequate for my purposes, but it's Americana (Sharps), not Africana, - one should have a proper rifle for the African continent of course. It would have to be a caliber like 577/450 or .450 #2 Musket or something along those lines - a cartridge and rifle with some African history. And preferably one that was historically a bp cartridge.

Military Martinis are out there by the boatload and they don't interest me. But a decent sporting Martini would fit the bill except that they tend be hard to find. Other makes of single shots would be of interest.

BTW, I don't know the twist rate for the barrels on these Martinis - does anyone know?

Other singleshots or even the ultra hyper-rare "affordable" double would be interesting.

Anyway, if any of you happen to know of a decent .45 (and it must be a .45 bore) that is available or could be made available, I would love to hear about it.

I suppose the "what is affordable" question has to be addressed. I think sub $3k. I just missed a perfect 577-450 Martini for $1750 the other day. What a bummer.

Anyway, a little piece of Africa in a .45 caliber is what I'm looking for. Email me at brentd@iastate.edu if you know of something that might work.

Thanks,
Brent

For me it would be the .577 Snider. No deer out to 100 yards would ever be safe again.

500,
I'm more interested in a eland rifle. I am set up for .450 caliber bullets so I want to stay in that caliber to avoid buying more swaging dies etc. And it will be loaded with black powder and paper patched bullets because that's how I do things. The .577-.450 would fit in if it has a reasonable twist rate.

What about an Alex Henry Falling Block in 450 3 1/4" ?

Should fit within your budget of $3k if you don't mind
a Single Shot and they are normally very accurate.

BP to boot as well !!!

A Henry would be perfect, and so would the .450-3.25"

But finding one? That's not easy.

I much prefer singleshots, esp with hammers. Bolts need not apply. Just a thing I have.
