My old 404 Jeff - Model 70 action from 1953
      #241085 - 24/01/14 07:24 AM

I have had this rifle for many years. Wish I could tell some exciting stories about hunting dangerous game with it but alas it has only taken whitetail deer with cast bullets in my hands. Maybe someday....

It is on a Model 70 action from 1953 with a supergrade stock put together by the famous gunsmith PO Ackley. It has a Paul Jaeger side mount for the 1.5 to 5x leupold scope. A lyman receiver sight can be used instead of the scope. There is no rear sight. It has a kynoch brass case head inletted in the stock forearm where the sling stud used to be. The stock has no cross bolts but is well fiberglassed and has never shown any sign of cracking.

While not fancy by any means, it feeds smoothly and reliably and is quite accurate.

Loks like a nice hunting rifle!

What are your loads, which mould etc?

60 grains of 4895 with a tuff of dacron filler is a wonderful cast bullet load. Quite powerful. I have a NEI mold that goes about 378 grains with lube and gas check. This is the bullet second from the left in the photo below. The bullet on the far left is a Mountain Mold 350 grain flatnose but it doesn't feed as well.
Another load that I use is 31 grains of trailboss which fills the case to the base of the bullet. This is a light pinking load that shoots to the same point of impact at 50 yards as the first load. [image][/image]

A very nice rifle, the 404 is one of the best!

That is a nice old rifle.
I've been looking for cast bullet moulds for my 404 and I would like to know what you do or use for gas checks..... 44 magnum perhaps ?
Thanks for any info.

Yes, 44 caliber gas checks work just fine for me.

Yup 44 cal checks do the job and size down no problems. My custom mould and 400gr cast bullet for my .404 below, the nose profile ensures smooth feeding from the magazine too.
