505 Gibbs Rifle (Pic)

Just got the last of my parts of my 505. Jim Wisner made the front sight and front swivel along with the extractor and 3 position safety.

Got my brass today. Now all I need are the dies and I'm ready to get my arse stomped. Sight and swivel are unpolished and unattached as they are to be engraved in the near future.

WOW that's a beauty! One hell of a front sight...it will look nice with some fine engraving. Enjoy! Say what action did you use?

I'll let you know about the horsepower after I shoot it.

The action is a BRNO 602. Three down plus one up the spout.

The gun us set up for scope use or iron sights. That's why the sights are so tall. Doubt I will ever mount a scope on it.

Nice tough looking rifle. Gotta get a 505 one day, I,m already a fan of the 602 actions. I see there is a fair bit of meat in the barrel. Should help tame the recoil a bit.

Weighs in at 12 pounds. Not muzzle heavy though. Balance point is about a half inch in front of the front guard screw. The weight should help in recoil dept. JefferyDenmark has a 500 Jeffery (no duh) that weighs in at 10 1/2#'s. He handles it quite well if you have seen the video of the big bore meeting in Sweden(?).

I have been talking to a couple of guys who shoot the big thumpers for advise. The biggest thing I've owned so far has been a 458 Win.

I will start slow and work up from there.

Seems to me that a scope would not last very long on a heavy hitter like the .505 short of dropping some $. Also IMHO a scope would ruin the clean lines of your rifle. Keep us informed.

And yes the Brno 602 is a great action!

There'll not be a scope on this rifle while I own it. Period

Purely out of fear for my own hide.

BTW, Talking to people who know. There are scopes made that will hold up. It's the rings that disintegrate on this make of rifle.

That's a nice looking rifle. Is it a single stack or staggered feed magazine?

The Leupold 2.5x compact with Talley rings and bases will hold up no problem. I had one on my .585 nyati for more than 3 years without so much as a hiccup. The Leupold 2.5x has a very short eyepiece, and I was never in danger of being hit, even when I got 750 grains up to 2320 fps.

The magazine is staggered.

Was your .585 built on a BRNO action?

It was on a model 70 classic stainless. Single stack magazine for 2 +1.

I have another one being build on a BBK02 for 3+1.

The M70 has a more solid mount setup is why your rings held up.

The BRNO only has the little recoil tab on "one" ring. The steel can't handle the g forces and bends the recoil tab. OK for lessor kickers, but not for the big stuff.

I, personally, don't have any experience in this area, but comes from a metalsmith who manufactures custom rings.
