I'm looking at purchasing a rifle in this calibre and was wondering what the general thought was on it as a round. Thanks.

It is a great round for all around use. It's usually in a rifle that is handier than a 375 H&H and can handle most game with 300 gr bullets in the right load. Do a search here and you'll find all kinds of 9.3 articles.

I have used it on Buffalo with 300 and 320 gr. bullets and in my 26" barreled gun it will run side by side with the great 375 H&H...I like the 320 gr. Woodleigh at about 2350 FPS with about 64 grs of H414 or 57 grs of RL-15, but these are max loads in my long throated chamber, so cut 5 grs. and work up....I use the same load for the 300 gr. bullets (Swift)

Neat rifle but hard to find brass and harder to find loaded ammo here in the States without going thru one of the custom loaders like Superior or Safari Ammo. But a fun gun to shoot loaded with nostaglia!

You can find all the ammo you want through Cabelas and various Sellier & Bellot dealers. Natchez carries S&B for around $26.00/box.

I am having a rifle rebored from 30-06 to 9,3x62 right now. It is a fantastic caliber!

Just for the record 9.3x62 brass is about everywhere, I get Norma, Lapua, FWS and HDS from Huntingtons, Midway and a few other places, and you can make it by simply running a 30-06, 280, 270 case through a 9.3x62 die that has a tapered expander...bullets are easy to come by...

The 9.3x64 brass is presently available from Huntingtons.

I've tried Cabela's several times and they keep telling me that they don't have the Norma Onyx or the S&B 9.3 ammo in stock! Tried today again and heard the same thing. Alot of folks show it in their catalogs, but few actually have it in stock when you call. Just my experience.

I've bought brass from Lock, Stock and Barrel, and Graf's. I've also made them from 30-06. The Speer bullets are downright cheap for practice and every other commonly available bullet is a premium grade.

Dies are easy to get and the bullets are big enough to reload without using tweezers.

For Heaven sake listen to Uncle Ray and start reloading, if you don't he'll just wear you down.

An excellent caliber!
With softer bullets like KS, or TM Alaska it is very fine for hunting boar or elk. With harder bullets like TUG it works fine on Eland, for example. My mother shot with 286gr TUG Elands and one black bear in BC. All one shot kills.

I think the 9.3x62 is a heck of a cartridge. It certainly betters the 35 Whelen. I would worry a bit about resale though. I don't think it's a cartridge that people get all warm and fuzzy over.

Back in the middle '80's Jim Coffin built a 98 Mauser on the 9.3x62 on speculation. I engraved it for him. Again on spec. It took 4 or 5 years to sell that rifle. Many times people would fondle the rifle and get that glassy-eyed look that we are all familier with. Mention the caliber and they would deflate like a balloon.

People may be more accepting now. Though the metric calibers aren't at the top of many lists. Uninformed as it may be.

Speaking of the 9.3 x 64, does anyone know of the quality of Horneber brass?

I would like to build up a rifle around the 9.3 x 64, but I would hate to do that given only one source of brass. Who else makes x64 besides Horneber?

Thanks,

RobertD

RWS of course!
And they are by far the best brass you can buy in 9,3x64.
But i am not informed about the marketsituation of this brass in the US!

Seems like you would be stuck with getting only Horneber brass in a 64. Why not a 9,3X62, the brass is plentiful and you can get them from various vendors.

RWS has never been able to establish a market here in the US like Norma has. I love their ammo and brass, but have a heck of a time tracking it down.

Horneber is absolutly the best of brass...

As to the 9.3x62, I get most of my brass from Huntingtons and I like the Lapua brass best of all...I have a supply of RWS and its very good stuff as is Norma, but Lapua is about the best in any caliber and the necks are annealed and they are always sized and round, just load them out of the box....thats a plus.

Thanks for the info, Ray. I'm having an '09 Argentine made into a 9,3x62 as we speak...double set triggers and all. Good brass makes all the difference, as far as I'm concerned.

By the way Buffalo Arms sells 9.3X64 brass made from .458 win mag brass with the belt turned off and the rim beveled properly. I have used it in my Home brew 9.3X64 and it's just as good as the Horneber stuff. I have a decent supply of both. FWIW my 9.3X64 with the 250 gr Nosler BT hits 2850 fps easily with sub MOA accuracy. It was built on a FN Mauser action and a Pac-Nor barrel. I remain very impressed with this cartridge.-Rob

R, just out of curiosity, what advantage does the X64 offer over the X62? That's 2 silly millimeters, does that translate to better ballistics and better energy downrange?

The 9,3x64 Brenneke is not only 2 milimeters longer, it is thicker, too!
By the way Geco is a brand of RWS a few years ago RWS bought Norma and last year RUAG bought RWS!

475guy- The 9.3X64 has more case capacity than the 9.3X62. I didn't run the numbers, but the base of the 62 is .476 and that of the 64 is .507. Looks like the 62 will run out of steam at 2400fps while the 64 will do 2700fps both with 286 grs bullets. I actually saw 2950 with a 250 gr nosler out of mine. Scared me to death, and I reduced the load quickly. My experience with the 9.3X64 was extremely good. By the way, I see your in Isleton. My ranch is up in Mendocino. Are you coming to the .50BMG shoot in Reno in April?-Rob

R, when is it in April. In April there's also the Gold Medal Concours in Ione area where the DB rifles and shotguns are displayed and contestants shoot 'em. If you're interested, go to www.goldmedalconcours.com

Butch Searcy has had a booth there for a few years and I was going there to drool and yak his ear off.

The 9,3x74r is a long rimmed 9,3x62 in factory loadings. The 9,2x64 walks all over the other two and is on par with the 375 H&H.

Hell, I like'em ALL...!

For all people who think that the 9,3x64 is not strong enough: There is still the 9,3x70 DWM Magnum
It bases on the old 404 Jeffery... But for that cartridge it is realy difficult to get brass.
