I was reading recently that the late Jack Lott once rechambered a Browning BAR to .458 win. mag..This sounds like it would be a cool gun and a worth while project. Does anyone out there have any experience with this type of conversion? Also do you know anyone you would trust to do the work? I look forward to recieving your comments.Dangerous Dave..

I would not expect the action to last long at those energy levels... but it would make an interesting project... interesting recoil profile for sure!!!

From what I remember of the article, all he did was rebarrel it and tweaked it for the fatter round as far as feeding. I think he used the same gas port setting. This kind of work once you find somebody reliable to do it is going to be expensive.

The article was in a book called "Big Bore Rifles". It came out in the early 80's. I still have the book-- except its in the basement somewhere packed up in a box from my last move. There was some work needed on the gas system to make the BAR feed properly. As the .338 and .458 have the same max pressure rating-- I think durability would be fine.

All that would be needed is to get a stronger recoil spring and somehow fit a buffer to it. Wouldn't that be something to play around with?

A BAR in 338 would seem to be a natural for this project.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the BAR is gas operated. The spring would provide a return to battery.

It would be a neat gun to play with, but I don't think I would care to bet my life on a semi auto big bore. IMHO

When semi.autos were legal here there were a few 458 bar`s made for sambar hunters with more money than sense, apparently they were used quite successfully too.
