Main problem was the graphics were huge in kb size and when that large do not display reliably on the net.

I have reduced them from about 300 kb to about 50 to 70 kb, and shifted them to NE.com. The photo is displayed the same dimension however.

Thanks Ann for the photos,

Hmmm, I will check them again but they should have been the standard size I always use, 650x400!

Joao
He was youngest of the 7 magnificent and the unico that not "died with the tusk on", since in 1985 it appeared with the 2 divided tusk, probably due to a fight with another male. Esteem that it's master tusk should be about 2,8 m. long and 133 lbs.

This one was hunted in Tamafupa, Botswana, last year by a spanish hunter. The master tusk was 98 pounds and the other one was broken in the middle, anyway, was 57 pounds.
I can ask for calibers used and other info if you need it.

470nitro,

I see that Mafunyane had a strange hole in the top of his head! It looks like something that might have been made by another elephants tusk. Does anyone know how this happened and how deep it went.

I'd think it must have gotten filled with water when it rained.

Erik

The one in my avatar . Taken in Tamafupa (Botswana) in 2003 with my Remington 700 416 Rem. The heaviest tusk is 65 pounds.

I think so. I've seen elephant skulls before, with a hole like this, but in different places. A fight beetween animals like those, should be amazing to see.

I guess the name for this procedure would be: "Tusk Administered Bush Lobotomy"!

My guess is that it probably wasn't caused by a fight at all. I personally think there's a very good chance it was caused by a weighted spear laid by a poacher. - The Elepant museum in the KNP has a couple of examples of these things on display. It's a bloody great spear head weighted with a large rock and hung up in a tree. As Mr Big Ears walks under it, a tripwire is set off and the weighted spear falls and penetrates the skull or spine.

470NE posted photos of the so called Magnificent Seven from the Kruger. I have photos of some of their clean skulls and tusks but I don't know how to up load them...
The hole on top of Mafunyane's head was 10cm in diameter and extended to his nasal cavity, enabling him breath through it.

ozhunter

Thanks again for that photo of your own. A great photo of a great tusker with a very unusual colour differentiation between the bull and the green undergrowth.

Any idea of what weight the tusks went? 70 - 80 lbs perhaps?

Nitro,
The Ele has the colour of the Tsavo red soil and I estimated it to be around 80lbs but a PH reckoned over 100lbs so who knows?
It made the Toyota RAV4 look awfully small at fifteen meters..

I found this one, in Moz, next to the border when stalking plains game. The camera was a common pocket one. He was all by himself and never knew about us. I've never seen a dead one, can someone estimate the weight from this poor angle?
