Photos of large tusked elephant wanted!

Photos of Large Tusked Elephant Wanted !!!

If anyone has photographs of large tusked elephant bulls, scans from magazines (copyright excepted of course! ) - it would be much appreciated if you could post them up here.

If the bull was a "named" beast, it also would be great if you posted its name.

DEAD OR ALIVE !

Either for the photo is OK. If dead, if you have it, an approximate year, place, shooter and/or owner (of the ivory), weapon used and anything else informative would also be much appreciated.

Weight or estimated weight of the ivory would also be appreciated.

I would like to gather some of this information for a permanent eMagazine archive of great elephant bulls. Thanks.

There you go Bwana John:

Don't know who took this one, but I lifted it from a magazine and the editor tells me the photographer is dead and the image is in the public domain. I didn't see this one in the flesh - so am reluctant to make a guesstimate as to weight.

I took this one in Masailand and would estimate him to be 90-95 lbs a side. They're long but thin.

This one isn't particularly big - but it's a nice image anyway..... I took this one in KZN and I'd guesstimate them to be around 35 lbs a side, maybe a bit more.

This is the same Elephant as the previous image (if I remember correctly) - but taken a couple of years earlier. Note the pink dart in his ass - just after this was taken he went over and we fitted him with a radio collar....

Would you believe it we had a bull elephant do this to us in Addo Elephant Park in South Africa.

While driving along a track an elephant came running along behind us. He kept at it too, for a long time. He was far enough away that it didn't feel too dramatic. Eventually the guide decided to step on the gas and leave it behind to keep the "tourists" safe. That actually really FFFFs me off, as it could have been very good film footage. I'm sick of dealing with these hand holding spineless types who pretend to be "guides". Too many opportunities lost for good results over the last few years.

Thanks for posting the photos!

My pleasure John - I was in the KNP wirh Mama Susan a few years ago and got chased in a similar way...... I just paced the Elephant and asked her to get some photo's - Not only did she refuse, she told me I was mucking fad!

I'ts a funny thing but for some reason Elephants don't seem to like the sound of the exaust note on my old truck and it seems to make them very aggressive........

Actually we stopped to look at another hartebeest or something probably a kilometre away and I looked back. He was still running flat out towards us along the track.

Either he wanted to get somewhere quickly or he didn't like Aussies and Poms.

Edited to add:

Actually I think I remember. I was just getting out the videocamera to film the running ele when the guide decided to take off again. And took off at speed so no chance of any filming. This was one of those "green" places where you can't drive off roads, etc etc etc so nothing is "disturbed". Except your wallet!

Some of the best running or "charging" ele footage has been from the back of a landcruiser.

Well, you can't blame him for not liking Aussies - After all, they prefer that vegemite stuff over real marmite!

Erik,

I think you'll find the Elephant in your pic is probably one of the two in my image of the crater. - There are two that tend to hang out around that fever tree forest.....

What about photos of those large "named" Kruger bulls?

Anyone know where some of those could be obtained?

Steve,

I think it must be the one on the righthand side of your picture. There was another (slightly smaller one) nearby when I took it, which I woudd guess could be the one on the left of your picture..

I was actually about to ask you about your picture, as I recognized the backround as being in the crater, although you wrote "Masailand".

Erik

Erik,

Yes, it was in the Ngorororo Crater - Masailand! The bigger of the two bulls has a party trick of getting onto his hind legs and stretching up to pull brances off the fever trees.

Here are a few more pictures of the same Elephant (I think) from the crater with a monster Buffalo thrown in for good measure.

John,

You might be able to get something from the KNP website and/or their Elephant museum.... if you can't, let me know and I'll try to pay them a visit early next year and see what I can get from them......

We didn't see any live bulls in RSA in 2004, but this little fellow greeted us as we entered the elephant museum at KNP...

you should buy a copy of the art of hunting the african elephant by richard harland

he has a chapter with 50+ "tuskers" in it - all attribuited photos

the one of the charging bull in this thread was taken by L Potgieter

John,

I am shy a photo hosting site at the moment but I just took a photograph of the large bull on display at the Smithsonian/Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. He doesn't match some of the great bulls already posted here but he's worth sharing.

Sadly they had absolutely no details about this bull, nothing on who hunted him nor who did the excellent taxidermiy work. It's an old mount but gorgeous, he has thick tusks.

I need a place to host that photo and one I took from The Field Musuem in Chicago which had a nice pair of tuskers from the "olden days".

Ann,
I saw that bull when I went to the NA. I was blown away by the overall size of that bull. He was incredible. It was that sighting that got me hot to hunt a trophy bull.

Scott,

What was your estimate on that bulls tusk weight? They looked pretty thick to me.

Akeley's pair of elephants from the Field Museum in Chicago. He and his wife shot these bulls and also did the mount!

Hmm, not sure why the photos are not showing. John?
