Fiction - 'Taller Than Trees' by John Gordon Davis.

The same author of 'Hold My Hand I'm Dying'. I bought it on a whim at 11yo and fell in love with Africa, double rifles and the Zambezi Valley pre Kariba..

Apart from the bible: John Taylor's African Rifles and Cartridges, the book that gets the most popular review from fellow shooting and hunting friends is Brian Herne's White Hunters: The golden age of African safaris.

Nobody has bettered Taylor's book, and Herne brings to life so many characters and the times from the golden age.

I like Hunter by J.A. Hunter, and I also really enjoyed Bror Blixen: The Africa Letters and the writings of Kermit Roosevelt. But, Death in the Long Grass by Peter Capstick is a classic against which all others should be measured.

I can pretend I have read quite a lot of Africana books but
if I get shored on an island with only one book I'd opt for

ALEXANDER LAKE : KILLERS IN AFRICA,

which can rivalize with its counterpart from John Pondoro. " 'The Truth About Animals Lying In Wait And Hunters Lying In Print'" to summarize it.
A really vivid book.
the other book of AL ,HUNTER's CHOICE which title is ringing like some book from Hunter is also sheer fun.

More good news, they are cheap.
Just ask Erik his opinion on Killers in Africa.

good books but J Osborne was very depreciative with Ron Thompson, a talented game manager.

ron thomson books

His book Mhahobho is well written and very vivid, a reference for ele hunter.

OOOOOppppppsss

I forgot the ultimate reference on elephant hunting, Rich Harland " Ndlovu the art of hunting elephant" , the bible on elephant.

Even Craig Boddington is quoting his book on his forum devoted to promote only his books.
Craig's website
I am very fond of this book that I have read many many times for 3 reasons. Its a unique book most informative on elephant, the copy was a gift from a real gentleman well known on this forum, I had the grace to visit Rich Harland, thanks to Buzz Charlton, and Rich, a perfect and exquisite gentleman, gave me a copy of Ndlovu for my cousin stranded 10 days in a clinic in Harare after a Ndlovu cow decided to squash him.

"A vagabond hunter" - Sten Cedergren. An amazing story about a man from Sweden, he was in the Korea war and then ended up in Zimbabwe working as a PH for 35 years. He died some years ago, I visited him in 1994.
Some of the books about the life of Baron Bror von Blixen are intersting stories.
I like "Hunter" by JA Hunter. And there are more....

I don't think I have read a bad African Hunting book, not that I have read that many. Probably death in the Long Grass by Capstick.

Taylor's bible of course then Bell of Africa for the sheer dogged pursuit of a childhood dream. But the creme de la creme of dangerous game writing is not out of Africa but has to come from India, Kenneth Anderson and Jim Corbett, you really smell the jungle and the danger with these great hunters from a bygone era.

I could be wrong, of course. Just ask my ex-wife.

But, it seems to me that a lot of the people who wrote these books don't much like each other. For instance, and let me for once avoid Capstick, when John Osborne says that the taking of the largest ele ever killed in the former Rhodesia or current Zimbabwe in what is now the Gona-Re-Zhou by a "South African plutocrat" was a disgrace, I somehow sense he doesn't feel to highly of Richard Harland. The guy who, you know, guided that particular plutocrat to that particular elephant.

The thing is, I like the books written by both Richard Harland and John Osborne. So it's difficult for me to take sides. Actually it's impossible for me to take sides, as I wasn't there. So I enjoy them both.

And I accept the fact that reality is going to be something different than what I was led to believe once I get there.

Now, back to Capstick . . .

Hemingway - Green Hills of Africa - which I have read and listened to on audio innumerable times,

Capstick - Death in the Long Grass (and others) for entertainment

Brian Herne - White Hunters - For great stories and (I think) exceptional writing

also,

Jock of the Bushveld

And lots of Wilbur Smith

Another old post revived.

For me it's Green Hills of Africa.

I think you have to read it numerous times to really appreciate the depth of it.

Also all of Capstick (for entertainment)

Capstick's " Death in the Long Grass" was my 1st "Africa" book and was my favorite for a long time. I think I was about 15 or 16 when I first read it. I have longed to hunt in Africa ever since.
A wife (of over 28 years!) and family has prevented me from making it there yet. But I'm not complaining, My wife understands that some day she will lose me for a couple of weeks to fulfill my dream. I just cannot talk her into going with me (Australia is much more interesting to her though and the company I work for has a couple of facilities there!).
Once I read "The Last Ivory Hunter" it became my current favorite.
Looks like from the list above I'm in good company with my choices (of course I am, its Nitro Express) and there seems to be others that I need to read soon.

Since second grade, mine has been Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines". It lead me to all the other African hunting literature.

Without doubt Ruarks Horn of the Hunter. Read it first when I was eleven and blame it for a good many vices I have developed. I always keep a paperback copy in my ute and its one book I can pick up and open at any page and read on. If I was only allowed to own one book for the rest of my life that would be it.

Ian Nyschens "Months of the Sun"
Fred Everett "Heat, Thirst and Ivory"
And the book that started my interest in African Hunting, Taylor "African Rifles and Cartridges"

Waiting to pick up a copy of Ian Nyschens "Footsteps of an Ivory Hunter"
