Great Tusker From Mozambique
      #145016 - 02/11/09 09:06 PM

I thought some of you guys might enjoy these pics of a really nice tusker recently taken in mozambique by my buddy Jason Van Aarde of Thomkinson African Safaris working with M’tswa Safaris LDA.

Incidentally, Jason is the guy who recently hunted with Paul and Jason told me that Paul was the fittest and most natural hunter, he'd hunted with all year!

Details are as follows:

Weights: 77 lbs & 65 lbs

Longest tusk: 7 foot 3 inches

Area: Meluco Area of Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique

Weather: Hotter 'n hell!

Oz,

The bulls are great travellers. A while ago they GPS collared a big bull in Zambia and over a longish period of wandering, it went all the up to Angola before turning back.

The film of the project is currently being edited to be made into a documentary for Nat Geo.

Here's another pic. I don't know if it's my imagination, but the animal looks to be unusually tall to me.

Nice bull. Not a species I'm personally interested in shooting, but if I ever make it to Africa for a buff hunt I'd love to be involved in an elephant hunt.Definitely would be an awesome experience, but other critters would top it for me.

I understand what you are saying..and we each have our own path to choose--I used to think exactely the same--and there still are several species I would like to harvest--but having been in on elephants on numerous occassions during the last safari alone---can honestly say, IMHO, there is not a whole lot more exciting in life that having a pissed off elephant heading your way 20 yards or less...INCREDIBLE...

Great to see, Steve,
I must email Jason to congratulate him. He was constantly measuring the tracks we saw but I don't think those of a bull that big crossed our path in September.

I don't suppose his client got that giant kudu, too? We saw the tracks of a kudu bull that were as wide as a biggish sambar or sable's and half as long again.

As to my hunting abilities, thanks but nah, I was too busy watching my step to see some of the critters when they appeared.

- Paul

You always hear about measuring foot size, but I thought big tuskers can have small feet and It's better to check for an old animals print?

Paul,

Sorry mate, I don't know what else he got!

Foot size is a helpful indicator but nothing more..... The best indicator I ever saw was at a waterhole where a big tusker had stopped to drink and left two loooooog grooves in the mud where he'd rested them.

We never did get to see him though!

Oh my mind is plenty open, I have nothing against an elephant hunt, and if I ever gome into 10 years' pay in one week I might have to try it after all. However, whenever I think of what I want to hunt most, my dreams always go back to an elk-a week or two camping in the mountains and hunting with an old military service rifle is my ideal trip. Given a chance, I just might change my mind and take an elephnt hunt just to get to Africa though.
