For longer ranges, yes of course. Single large bore fast opening if possible - or a big slap.

I suppose no one keeps a .458 around just for following up leopards ...

I think any decent PH would have a suitable rifle.

Regarding a big bore double rifle versus a shotgun for leopard and also lion follow up, per my observations and conversations, only the guys lacking a good big bore double rifle use a shotgun. Usually I get asked "how can I find an affordable double rifle?". A big question for everyone!

Here are various shotgun slugs & their reaction on hard concrete, if you are interested. Taofladermaus.
The last one weighed 2 1/2 ounces @ just over 1,000fps.

At near end of barrel range 7 shot will penetrate further than any buck shot. Several US Law Enforcement agencies have conducted test that show this, though for some reason I would feel more comfortable with 0 size buckshot.

I like the idea of a short barrel 45-70 for close in Leopard protection.

That is interesting. I find it hard to believe. So, not arguing w/ you at all but I would really like to test that #7 vs buckshot in my boards and jugs! Any idea what the LE test medium was?

Remember they are talking inside house range. The Buckshot starts to open on leaving the barrel where as the smaller shot strings to start with. The best way I find to visualize this is multiple mini drones attack. The first wave damage and weaken then next lot do more of this and subsequent one's just go through the hole. Or think of it as one long slug with mass weight as opposed to say 9 individual 32 calibre bullets.

I forget the distance where the smaller shot patter starts to open up, but once it does it loses its sledge hammer effect.

I am curious as well. Saw some close penetration of 12 bore #4's I think, then I think they went to 00 buckshot and Foster slugs. Not sure on exact shot sizes, though.
In all cases the slugs caused the most damage on the "human" torso(s) used, depth and well as radiating damage to tissue and bones. They were actually quite devastating.

Charlie is, well, comedic support, kinda.

No.7 shot would be used by police as they don't want casualties among other persons in a house. For the opposite reasons as no.7 shot won't penetrate walls etc.

At very close range any shot clump makes a big hole.

But no smart persons would be planning for such extremely close range shooting.

Incorrect. 7 shot penetrates more than Buck at in house ranges this is why police wont use it now. Buck does not clump just out of the barrel like the smaller shot does. This was clearly shown in the test various US Law Enforcment bodies did.

7 shot went through more gyprock walls than any of the buck shot did. I was very surprised at this.

I just can't "see" this with small shot, just from G/Thumb's testing.
Now, we don't know what size "bird" shot G/Thumb was using. It looked like maybe 4's or 6's. Seems to me, he didn't get the "penetration" on the skull until the range was bare inches, not yards. 15 yards, a few pellets managed to pen to the liver, etc. At even 10 yards, there was not severe damage to the bones of the skull & on the body, the penetration barely made it to the lungs.
At 5 yards, severe damage to the skull though = devastating, just like a slug at about 75-100yards.

I can't see no.7 penetrating more, nexceptcat extremely close ranges. Not disputing the comments or those tests.

I think I remember Police somewhere switched to smaller shot to. Avoid wall penetration. Perhaps no. 4s. I don't remember exactly.

If I needed close quarters defensive shot shells I'd use my fox loads in BBs.

If it was in woodland or open fields SSGx or SGs. Longer range effectiveness?

Of course the dhotshells down are for foxes, pigs etc.
