Hunting Lionesses ?
      #78334 - 10/05/07 05:02 AM

Has anyone here hunted lionesses? Is it cheaper or more readily available than a male lion hunt?

Where can it be done?

What is the 'ethics' of hunting lionesses and anything special involved?

Thanks.

I was told by 3 PH's from Zim that they absolutely don't hunt lioness.

I think the thought is to leave them alone and increase the carrying capacity of the lions territory as much as possible.

Several PH's I spoke with seemed in agreement that the absolute number of lions has decreased over the last 20 yrs years due to their visibility (lifestyle in the open) and the poaching by the locals. They have a high reproductive rate but their numbers are still diminshing.

Ultimately,I think Lions are just not tolerated in any proximity to people or civilization.

I know the regulations of only countries of central and western Africa.
Birds and hares apart, shooting females and subadults is a crime.
So shooting a lioness costs at least double lion fee in Burkina Faso.
In the CAR, it's custody to begin with and a hefty bail (pocketed and lost forever) about 60 000 $.
In Cameroon the sanction might be between theses examples.

I wonder if I could shoot a lioness. I have a tremendous admiration for this beautiful predator. I love to see them (on the TV) when tense stalking a prey, the tail + back+ tip of the snout forming a straight line, the shoulder blades jutting. Fantastic vision. And this geometric head’s profile, as cut with a hatchet.
Has somebody a photo of a stalking lioness?

Right now I am considering to book a safari for buffalo in Guinea, where You could shoot a lion or lioness if You are lucky enough to see one. No need to buy licenses before the hunt, You could shoot all legal game and pay after the hunt. A male lion will cost 6000,- Euro, a lioness 3000,- Euro. The cost for the safari is 4000,- Euro, so this should be the cheapest possibility to shoot a lion. Of course the chances are very remote to just see a lion there, let alone the unstable political situation, which makes me think twice about this hunt.
Of course most hunters are dreaming of a black maned lion, and I am no exception. On the other side, all game animals are beautiful creatures, be it male or female, so it is a rather personal decision. Just think of hunting cow elephants.

I was at an SCI dinner last year and they auctioned off a SA lioness hunt. The hunt was valued at 12K as listed in the auction program (most likely padded a bit )and sold for less than half. It was through Steyn Safaris & purchased by a member of our chapter. The hunt itself took place at the Shingalana Lion & rhino reserve in Hartbeesfontein SA. and from the article the hunter wrote about his trip, sounded quite uneventful and lasted about 45 minutes.
Sporting or not, I think would have to be a personal decision. We shot Doe's & cows of every other species. As long as sound game management is at work I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Personally I have no problem with hunting a lioness if it is legal and if I believe it doesn't or won't hurt conservation of lion efforts.

Just like elephant cows, my armchair theory is lionesses are probably more dangerous than the male.

My main interest is I remember on Zimbabwe safari price lists they were usually significantly cheaper than a male lion, and I also wondered if the daily rates was the same for a "lion" hunt or not.

Kalunga

Which Guinea are You speaking of? Guinea bissau or Guinea Conakry?
For 10000 euros or about, You are certain to shoot a lion in Burkina Faso?

In Zim a couple of seasons back a lioness was left on quota and we made an attempt to take it but without success. A male and two females were seen on a hyena bait by another PH and we tried a go at it but all the comotion boogered it out of the area. It was pretty tense walking into the standup blind anitcipating the lion to still be in the area around the bait. Even more intense when we left the blind to give the area a look.
